The luminaries in the heavens were screened by masses of clouds, in which lightning sometimes flashed as though laughing. Darkness reigned everywhere, and nothing could be seen.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
With complete darkness, no place could be seen in the sky without luminaries visible, caused by dense clouds with lighting, which seemed to laugh loudly Nothing could be seen in the sky which had luminaries (bhā-gaṇaḥ) because of masses of clouds with laughing lightning.
Luminaries screened by clouds, darkness reigning, only lightning flashing as if laughing. When darkness is dominant, even what little light remains seems mocking. The verse names a real experience of spiritual eclipse.
Reflection Questions
  • When I'm in spiritual darkness, do flashes of insight feel encouraging or mocking?
  • What can I do when the sky's luminaries are screened — wait, pray, study?
