Ominous planets such as Mars and Saturn shone brighter and surpassed the auspicious ones such as Mercury, Jupiter and Venus as well as a number of lunar mansions. Taking seemingly retrograde courses, the planets came in conflict with one another.

The entire universe is moving under the three modes of material nature. Those living entities who are in goodness are called the pious species — pious lands, pious trees, etc. It is similar with the planets also; many planets are considered pious, and others are considered impious. Saturn and Mars are considered impious. When the pious planets shine very brightly, it is an auspicious sign, but when the inauspicious planets shine very brightly, this is not a very good sign.

Translation
The inauspicious planets with retrograde motion overtook the auspicious planets and fought with them. “Auspicious planets” refers to Jupiter, Venus, and others. Cruel planets Mars, Saturn, and others surpassed the auspicious planets and with retrograde motion fought. [Note: When a planet from our vision moves in the opposite direct from its normal course in the sky, it is called retrograde motion. The planet exerts strong influence. When two or more of the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, or Saturn come within one degree longitude of each other they are said to fight with each other. ]
The cosmology here is not abstract scenery — it locates the reader inside a vast, intelligent order. Seeing your tiny role in this design quietly cools the urge to make yourself the centre. The verse keeps returning to modes of material nature.
Reflection Questions
  • How does it change your day to remember the universe was not built around your preferences?
  • Which 'cosmic' problem are you trying to solve when your actual task is just to play your small part well?
