[Vidura said:] You must now return the legitimate share to Yudhiṣṭhira, who has no enemies and who has been forbearing through untold sufferings due to your offenses. He is waiting with his younger brothers, among whom is the revengeful Bhīma, breathing heavily like a snake. Surely you are afraid of him.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
“Give the rightful portion of the kingdom to Yudhiṣṭhira, who has tolerated your intolerable aggression-- because of which, Bhīma, along with his brothers, remains breathing heavily in anger at your offenses. This gives you fear. Because of the offenses (yatra) Bhīma breathes heavily in anger, because of which you are in great (alam) fear.
Restoring what rightfully belongs to others is more spiritual than any private piety. Stalling repayment because the other party is patient is exploiting their virtue; one day even patient people stand up.
Reflection Questions
  • What do you owe someone, materially or emotionally, that you have been 'meaning to' return?
  • Are you mistaking another person's patience for permission to keep withholding?
