Just then the child inhaled, drawing Mārkaṇḍeya within His body like a mosquito. There the sage found the entire universe arrayed as it had been before its dissolution. Seeing this, Mārkaṇḍeya was most astonished and perplexed.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
At that moment, the child, by inhaling, drew Mārkaṇḍeya within his body like a mosquito. There the sage found the entire universe arrayed as it had been before its dissolution. Seeing this, Mārkaṇḍeya was most astonished and perplexed. Adaḥ means the universe. He saw everything as it was before the devastation (yathā purā).
The infant inhales, drawing Markandeya within His body like a mosquito; inside, the sage finds the whole universe arrayed as before. Inside the Lord, what looked external is internal. Reality is nested differently than we think.
Reflection Questions
  • Where might my 'external' problem actually live inside something bigger that holds it?
  • What changes when I view it from that nested angle?
