At times he was engulfed by the great whirlpools, sometimes he was beaten by the mighty waves, and at other times the aquatic monsters threatened to devour him as they attacked one another. Sometimes he felt lamentation, bewilderment, misery, happiness or fear, and at other times he experienced such terrible illness and pain that he felt himself dying.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
At times he was engulfed by the great whirlpools, sometimes he was beaten by the mighty waves, and at other times the aquatic monsters threatened to devour him as they attacked one another. Sometimes he felt lamentation, bewilderment, misery, happiness or fear, and at other times he experienced such terrible pains that he felt himself dying.
Engulfed by whirlpools, beaten by waves, threatened by monsters — Markandeya endures all of it. Spiritual endurance is not stoicism; it is the body's continuance while the soul keeps reaching. Both must be honored.
Reflection Questions
  • What is currently asking for endurance from my body and reach from my soul?
  • How do I keep both engaged rather than just one?
