One thousand cycles of four ages constitute a single day of Brahmā, known as a kalpa. In that period, O King, fourteen Manus come and go.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
One thousand cycles of four ages constitute a single day of Brahmā, known as a kalpa. In that period, O King, there are fourteen Manus.
A thousand cycles of four yugas — and that's only one day for Brahma. Even a creator-god is a creature of time. The verse quietly dissolves any illusion that any position, however lofty, escapes the wheel.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose 'permanence' have I been treating as final — a leader, an institution, even my own body?
  • What does it free me to relax about when I accept time governs all levels of being?
