In Tretā-yuga each leg of religion is gradually reduced by one quarter by the influence of the four pillars of irreligion — lying, violence, dissatisfaction and quarrel.
Purport
By falsity truth is diminished, by violence mercy is diminished, by dissatisfaction austerity is diminished, and by quarrel charity and cleanliness are diminished.

Translation
In Tretā-yuga each leg of religion is gradually reduced by one quarter by the influence of the four pillars of irreligion—lying, violence, dissatisfaction and quarrel.
Truth is reduced by lying. Mercy is reduced by violence. Austerity is reduced by dissatisfaction. Cleanliness is reduced by quarrel.
Personal Guidance
By Tretā, each leg of dharma loses a quarter — falsity erodes truth, violence erodes mercy, dissatisfaction erodes austerity, quarrel erodes charity. Naming these enemies precisely makes them easier to spot in our own day.
Reflection Questions
- Which of the four — falsity, violence, dissatisfaction, quarrel — is most active in me?
- What deliberate counter-practice could weaken it this week?
