Sūta Gosvāmī said: Drinking with his ears Lord Śiva’s nectarean words, full of the confidential essence of religion, Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi could not be satiated.

Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi was not eager to hear himself praised by Lord Śiva, but he appreciated Lord Śiva’s deep realization of religious principles and therefore desired to hear more.

Translation
Sūta Gosvāmī said: Drinking with his ears Śiva's words, full of bhakti and intimate teachings, Mārkaṇḍeya could not be satiated. Dharma mentioned here is pure bhakti mentioned in verse 20 and not seeing difference between self and others mentioned in verse 22. Guhya was “we worship you in verse 22. Words full of bhakti and the intimate relation of the Lord with his devotee could not satisfy him completely. He was not experiencing bliss from being praised but, in the guise of being praised, getting instructions --telling him what type of person he should be.
Markandeya drinks Siva's nectarean words through his ears, unable to be satiated, having been forced by maya to wander long. After dryness, even a little real teaching is endlessly nourishing. Receive when offered.
Reflection Questions
  • What teaching, even small, am I currently not letting myself fully drink in?
  • What could help me receive more thirstily?
