The Supersoul enters the material bodies of the created beings, activates the mind and senses, and thus causes the conditioned souls to approach the three modes of material nature for sense gratification.

The following is a summary of Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura’s commentary on this verse.

The one Supersoul enters the gross material elements (earth, water, fire, air and ether) and uses the activated material mind to subtly divide the sensory activities of the conditioned souls among the five knowledge-acquiring senses (the eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin) and, by a further gross division, the five working senses (the hands, legs, speech, genitals and anus). Because liberated souls have a strong tendency to serve the Lord, they are not attracted by the dualities of material good and evil. They derive their pleasure through devotion and love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who eternally enjoys His own transcendental pastimes beyond the material manifestation.

When the conditioned souls forget their loving relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, they develop illicit desires. Therefore, unable to serve the form, taste, fragrance and other aspects of Lord Viṣṇu, these souls become bound to the bitter fruits of fruitive activities. But if their love of Godhead is somehow or other awakened, the conditioned souls can dovetail all their sensory activities in the service of the Lord’s transcendental pastimes.

Actually, all materialistic activities are most undesirable. But the conditioned soul, under the influence of illusion, sees apparent distinctions between good and bad, pleasing and displeasing, and so on. The Lord, the Supersoul, having entered the collective and individual consciousness of the living entities, knows the heart of everyone. Therefore when a sincere soul aspires for spiritual perfection, the Lord frees him from material bondage and arouses his propensity to serve the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha. Love of Godhead flourishes in the variegated flavors of transcendental enjoyment. In ignorance, however, the conditioned soul considers himself the proper object of service and thus misunderstands the entire existential situation.

Translation
The Lord, having entered the material bodies created by the five elements, divides himself into the mind and ten senses and engages the jīva in enjoying the sense objects. Three verses describe the situation after creation. Having entered the bodies created by the five gross elements as Paramātmā, the Lord, dividing himself up to the mind and the ten external senses, makes the jīva enjoy the senses objects produced by the guṇas
The Supersoul enters every body and activates the senses — the same energy can drag you toward the guṇas or be dovetailed in service to Kṛṣṇa.
Practical Applications
  • Before each sense engagement today — a meal, a screen, a conversation — pause and ask whether you are about to enjoy the guṇas or serve Kṛṣṇa through that sense.
  • Pick one sense (eyes or tongue) and dovetail it deliberately for a full day: look only at things you can offer to Kṛṣṇa, speak only what you could repeat in His presence.
  • Refuse the framing that some material pleasures are 'good' and others 'bad' — treat the whole field of sense gratification as one bondage, and choose devotional engagement instead.
Reflection Questions
  • Which of my ten senses is most aggressively pulling me into the guṇas right now, and what would it mean to dovetail that specific sense in Kṛṣṇa's service?
  • Where am I still negotiating with the Supersoul — asking Him to bless my sense gratification — rather than asking Him to awaken my propensity to serve?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • Before opening a social media app, pause and ask which of your ten senses is about to be activated and whose enjoyment you are really seeking.
  • Pick one friendship this week and consciously dovetail your speech in it — no gossip, no flattery, only words you could repeat before Kṛṣṇa.
  • When peers frame some pleasures as 'fine in moderation', refuse the moderation-trap and instead ask, 'can this be offered?' — if not, it is still bondage, however small.
householder
  • At the family dinner, treat the tongue as the test case: cook, offer, and eat as service, so the most repeated sense-act of the day becomes sādhana, not gratification.
  • When making a money or career decision, notice the guṇa it is appealing to (rajas — ambition, tamas — security, sattva — duty) and consciously place the decision under Kṛṣṇa rather than under the mode.
  • Teach your children early that the senses are instruments for service, not entitlements for enjoyment — model this by dovetailing your own eyes, ears, and tongue in front of them.
senior
  • As the working senses weaken, do not mourn them — observe how the Supersoul is gently withdrawing the instruments, and let that withdrawal teach detachment from viṣaya.
  • Use the remaining strength of the knowledge-acquiring senses to hear and chant about Kṛṣṇa, so the final years are spent dovetailing rather than reminiscing about past gratifications.
  • Mentor a younger seeker by sharing, without nostalgia, which sense indulgences yielded only the bitter fruits the purport describes — let your life be evidence of the verse.
Common Pitfalls
  • Concluding that because the Supersoul activates the senses, He sanctions whatever the senses chase — confusing His presence with His approval.
  • Reading 'Supersoul within' as an impersonal inner light or 'higher self', losing the personal Kṛṣṇa to whom the senses must be offered.
  • Treating sense control as mere suppression rather than as redirection — starving the senses instead of dovetailing them in bhakti.
Discussion Prompts
  • Share one sense activity you currently call 'harmless' — and let the group press you on whether it is being dovetailed or simply enjoyed in the guṇas.
  • If the same Supersoul sits in every heart activating every sense, how do you account for the wildly different choices people make? Where does free will actually live?
  • Disagree openly: is it possible for a householder to engage all ten senses in Kṛṣṇa's service today, or is some retreat from sense life unavoidable?
Role Play

Two students sit at a café. One has just discovered this verse and announces, 'Since Kṛṣṇa as Supersoul is the one activating my senses, my enjoyment is really His enjoyment through me.' The other student must respond as a Gauḍīya friend, distinguishing the Supersoul's neutral activation of the senses from the conditioned soul's misuse of them, and gently steering the first back toward dovetailing rather than rationalizing.

Objections & Responses
  • If the Supersoul Himself enters the body and activates the mind and senses, then He is the real cause of my sense gratification — why blame me?
The Supersoul activates the instrument; He does not choose the object. He gives you working eyes; you decide whether to look at Kṛṣṇa's form or at viṣaya. The purport is explicit: when love of Godhead is awakened, those very senses are dovetailed in His service; when forgotten, the same senses chase illicit desires. The agency of misuse is yours.
  • This sounds like a denial of ordinary human pleasure. Surely a good meal, music, beauty are simply part of being alive — why label them bondage?
The verse does not deny that the senses enjoy; it locates the problem in whose pleasure is being sought. Materialistic activities are called undesirable not because food and beauty are evil, but because, cut off from Kṛṣṇa, they bind you to the bitter fruits of fruitive activity. Offer the meal, hear music that glorifies Him, see beauty as His energy — the same senses now flourish in the variegated flavors of transcendental enjoyment.
