The wise man, whose consciousness is fixed in the self, does not even notice his own bodily activities. While standing, sitting, walking, lying down, urinating, eating or performing other bodily functions, he understands that the body is acting according to its own nature.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The wise man, whose consciousness is fixed in Paramātmā, does not even notice his bodily activities. While standing, sitting, walking, lying down, urinating, eating or performing other bodily functions, he understands that the body is acting according to its own nature. The jñānī, though situated in the body, does not investigate his body. His intelligence fixed in Paramātmā, he does not know the body (ātmānam). Ukṣantam means “while urinating.”
The wise man with consciousness fixed in self doesn't even notice his bodily activities — standing, sitting, walking, eating, the body acts according to its laws while he is elsewhere. Background-mode living.
Reflection Questions
  • When have I genuinely 'not noticed' my body while consciousness was placed higher?
  • What conditions allowed it?
