A brahmacārī should always remain silent while bathing, eating, attending sacrificial performances, chanting japa or passing stool and urine. He should not cut his nails and hair, including the armpit and pubic hair.
Purport
Nārada Muni gives a similar technical description of Vedic brahmacārī life in Canto Seven, Chapter Twelve, of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

Translation
A brahmacārī should always remain silent while bathing, eating, attending sacrificial performances, chanting japa or passing stool and urine. He should not cut his nails and hair, including the armpit and pubic area.
Personal Guidance
Stay silent while bathing, eating, at sacrifice, in japa, and while passing waste; don't cut hair or nails. The disciplines are exact and demanding.
Reflection Questions
- Where could conscious silence enter my own daily activities?
- What might silence reveal that speech now drowns out?
