My dear brāhmaṇas, I have now explained to you the confidential knowledge of Sāṅkhya, by which one philosophically distinguishes matter from spirit, and of aṣṭāṅga-yoga, by which one links up with the Supreme. Please understand that I am the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu, and that I have appeared before you desiring to explain your actual religious duties.
Purport
To increase the faith of Lord Brahmā’s sons and establish the prestige of His teachings, Lord Kṛṣṇa now formally identifies Himself as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu. As stated in Vedic literature, yajño vai viṣṇuḥ. After explaining the sāṅkhya- and aṣṭāṅga-yoga systems, the Lord clearly answers the original question of the sages, “Who are You, sir?” Thus, Lord Brahmā and his sons were enlightened by Lord Haṁsa.

Translation
O brāhmaṇas! Know that I am Viṣṇu who has come with a desire to teach you dharma. I have spoken the confidential knowledge of Sāṅkhya and aṣṭāṅga-yoga.
The Lord reveals his identity in order that they gain faith. Sāṅkhya means distinguishing ātmā and non-ātmā. Yoga means aṣṭāṅga-yoga. I have come with a desire to teach dharma. It should be understood that Haṁsa also taught about varṇāśrama duties, dharma. This teaching is referred to later in speaking about the duties of varṇāśrāma:
purā kila mahā-bāho dharmaṁ paramakaṁ prabho
yat tena haṁsa-rūpeṇa brahmaṇe ’bhyāttha mādhava
O Lord! O mighty-armed one! Previously in your form of Haṁsa you spoke to Brahmā about dharma that bring supreme happiness to the practitioner. SB 11.17.3
Personal Guidance
The Lord has explained Sāṅkhya (matter-spirit distinction) and aṣṭāṅga-yoga (linking with the Supreme) and confirms He is Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Method and Person are now both named.
Reflection Questions
- Which do I lean on more — method or Person?
- What would balancing the two produce?
