When sticks of kindling wood are vigorously rubbed together, heat is produced by contact with air, and a spark of fire appears. Once the fire is kindled, ghee is added and the fire blazes. Similarly, I become manifest in the sound vibration of the Vedas.

Lord Kṛṣṇa here explains the most confidential meaning of Vedic knowledge. The Vedas first regulate ordinary material work and channel the fruits into ritualistic sacrifices, which ostensibly reward the performer with future benefits. The real purpose of these sacrifices, however, is to accustom a materialistic worker to offering the fruits of his work to a superior Vedic authority. An expert fruitive worker gradually exhausts the possibilities of material enjoyment and naturally gravitates toward the superior stage of philosophical speculation on his existential situation. By increased knowledge, one becomes aware of the unlimited glories of the Supreme and gradually takes to the process of loving devotional service to the transcendental Absolute Truth. Lord Kṛṣṇa is the goal of Vedic knowledge, as the Lord states in Bhagavad-gītā: vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyaḥ. The Lord gradually becomes manifest in the progression of Vedic rituals, just as fire is gradually manifest by the rubbing of firewood. The words haviṣā samedhate (“the fire increases by addition of ghee”) indicate that by the progressive advancement of Vedic sacrifice, the fire of spiritual knowledge gradually blazes, illuminating everything and destroying the chain of fruitive work.

Lord Kṛṣṇa considered Uddhava to be the most qualified person to hear this elaborate transcendental knowledge; therefore the Lord mercifully instructs Uddhava so that he may enlighten the sages at Badarikāśrama, thus fulfilling the purpose of the sages’ lives.

Translation
When sticks of kindling wood are vigorously rubbed together, heat is first situated as heat in the wood, and then by assistance of air, a spark of fire appears. Once the fire is kindled, ghee is added and the fire blazes. Similarly, I gradually become manifest as the sound of the Vedas. The gradually manifestation of the Vedas is described with an example. Fire resides as invisible warmth in the space within wood when the wood is first rubbed. With more rubbing of the wood, fire appears in small amount with the aid of air, as a spark. When it clearly manifests as fire, it then increases with addition of oblations. Similarly I appear gradually as the sound of the Vedas. Without me who will understand the deep meaning of the Vedas? Having understood, who will establish the methods of bhakti, jñāna and karma for delivering the jīva from saṁsāra. By mercy, I am now giving these methods to you, the most qualified person, equal to me. The sages in Badarikāśrama, receiving this knowledge from you, will be successful.
Krsna manifests through Vedic sound as fire kindled from sticks blazes with ghee — let chanting and hearing ignite Him within you today.
Practical Applications
  • Chant the holy name aloud for a fixed period today, treating each syllable as the kindling rub that calls Krsna to manifest.
  • Read one verse of Srimad-Bhagavatam slowly with its purport, then pour the ghee of personal reflection onto it before closing the book.
  • Refuse to consume scripture as information only — speak it, hear it, and repeat it, so the friction of sravana and kirtana actually produces flame.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I rubbing the sticks of ritual and study but withholding the ghee of surrender that would let the fire actually blaze?
  • When I hear Vedic sound, do I treat it as mere text and tradition, or do I recognize Krsna Himself becoming manifest in the vibration?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • Audit one week of what sound you let into your ears — lyrics, lectures, feeds — and replace one habitual stream with japa or a recorded Bhagavatam class.
  • Before an exam or a difficult conversation, chant for five minutes instead of doom-scrolling, and notice which sound actually steadies you.
  • Refuse the peer assumption that scripture is cultural decoration; treat one verse this week as a live transmission you are testing in your own life.
householder
  • Set a fixed family time for hearing the holy name aloud — even ten minutes — so the home itself becomes a hearth where the sound can kindle.
  • When work pressure spikes, do not skip sadhana to add more karma-kanda effort; add the ghee of even brief, attentive chanting and watch the day reorganize.
  • Speak verses or purports aloud to your children rather than only explaining values in your own words, trusting that Krsna manifests in the vani they hear from you.
senior
  • Shift the center of your day from doing to hearing — let Bhagavatam recitation and chanting occupy the hours once spent on career and management.
  • Mentor a younger seeker by reading one verse aloud with them weekly, transmitting the sound rather than only your accumulated opinions.
  • As the body weakens, deliberately increase the ghee — deeper attention, longer japa, fewer distractions — so the fire of the name blazes brightest near the end.
Common Pitfalls
  • Treating the Vedas as a philosophical literature to be mastered intellectually, while the kindling of devotional hearing never even begins.
  • Stopping at the karma-kanda stage — using mantra and ritual to secure material rewards rather than letting the fire consume fruitive desire.
  • Assuming the sound is symbolic of an impersonal truth, missing that the vani is the personal manifestation of Krsna Himself.
Discussion Prompts
  • Share a moment when chanting or hearing scripture shifted from being a duty to being a living encounter — and a moment when it stayed dry wood. What was the difference?
  • If Krsna becomes manifest in Vedic sound, what does that say about the podcasts, songs, and feeds we let vibrate through our day instead?
  • The verse moves from spark to blaze through added ghee. What is the ghee in your sadhana right now — and what are you withholding?
Role Play

One student plays a busy professional who chants daily but feels nothing and suspects the practice is empty ritual. The other plays a senior devotee who must, using only this verse's imagery of friction, spark, and ghee, help them locate which stage they are actually in and what is missing — without resorting to platitudes.

Objections & Responses
  • Sound is just vibration in air — claiming Krsna personally manifests in it is mystical thinking that collapses under scrutiny.
The verse anticipates that very materialism — it concedes that fire too is only friction, air, and heat until ghee is added. The point is empirical, not magical: practice the process as described, and the manifestation is verified in your own consciousness, exactly as the kindled flame is verified in the hearth.
  • Why bother with Sanskrit Vedic sound when I can read translations and grasp the meaning directly in my own language?
Meaning matters, and Prabhupada gave us translations precisely for that reason — but the verse says Krsna manifests in the sound itself, not only in the concept. Translation gives the spark of understanding; chanting and hearing the original vibration, under guidance, adds the ghee that makes the fire actually blaze.
