Therefore, My dear Uddhava, abandon the Vedic mantras as well as the procedures of supplementary Vedic literatures and their positive and negative injunctions. Disregard that which has been heard and that which is to be heard. Simply take shelter of Me alone, for I am the Supreme Personality of Godhead, situated within the heart of all conditioned souls. Take shelter of Me wholeheartedly, and by My grace be free from fear in all circumstances.

Śrī Uddhava inquired from Lord Kṛṣṇa about the symptoms of saintly persons and liberated souls, and the Lord has replied in terms of different levels of spiritual advancement, distinguishing between those who are able to understand Lord Kṛṣṇa to be the principal goal of life and those loving devotees who accept Lord Kṛṣṇa and devotional service to Him as the only goal of life. Lord Kṛṣṇa also mentioned that He is captured by His loving devotees and even by those who sincerely associate with His loving devotees. Among all the devotees, the gopīs of Vṛndāvana were described by the Lord as having achieved such a rare state of pure devotional service that Lord Kṛṣṇa personally feels constantly indebted to them. According to Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura, Lord Kṛṣṇa previously kept the gopīs’ love for Him concealed in His heart because of its confidential nature and the Lord’s own gravity. Finally, however, even Lord Kṛṣṇa could not remain silent about the intense love of the gopīs, and thus in these verses the Lord reveals to Uddhava how the gopīs loved Him in Vṛndāvana and brought Him fully under their control. The Lord would relax in secret places with the loving gopīs, and by conjugal spontaneous affection the greatest love was exchanged between them.

As explained by the Lord in Bhagavad-gītā, one cannot achieve the perfection of life merely by renouncing the material world or by executing ordinary, sectarian religious principles. One must actually understand the identity of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and by associating with His pure devotees one must learn to love the Lord in His personal, original form. This love may be expressed in either the conjugal, parental, fraternal or serving rasa, or relationship. The Lord has elaborately explained to Uddhava the system of philosophical analysis of the material world, and now He clearly concludes that it is useless for Uddhava to waste time in fruitive activities or mental speculation. Actually, Lord Kṛṣṇa is hinting that Uddhava should assimilate the example of the gopīs and try to advance further in Kṛṣṇa consciousness by following in the footsteps of the cowherd damsels of Vraja. Any conditioned soul who is unsatisfied with the cruel laws of nature, which impose disease, old age and death, should understand that Lord Kṛṣṇa can deliver all living beings from the problems of material existence. There is no need to entangle oneself in unauthorized, sectarian rituals, injunctions or prohibitions. One should simply surrender to Lord Kṛṣṇa, following the example of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who is Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself. By the authorized regulated process of bhakti-yoga, Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one easily achieves spiritual perfection.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O Uddhava! Give up duties and forbidden acts, the path of enjoyment and the path of renunciation, desire to hear more about dharma, and what you have already heard about dharma. Surrender to me alone, the soul of all beings, using all methods, with bhāva in your mind. You will be fearless by my mercy. In reply to Uddhava’s question about the qualities of the devotee, Kṛṣṇa described three types of devotees. [Note: These are the karma-miśra-bhakta, the jñāna-miśra-bhakta and the kevala-bhakta.] By their respective association, one attains mixed or pure bhakti. In order to show that he is controlled by bhakti, he stated that he is controlled by association of devotees. After describing the devotees who associate with the saintly devotees, Kṛṣṇa praised pure bhakti-yoga, situated in the gopīs and others, as being very rare. The burning tears of love for the gopis which were deeply suppressed in his heart suddenly burst forth with his statement in verse 10, in which he indicated that the gopīs had reached the highest level as devotees. To inspire Uddhava with that high level of pure bhakti, Kṛṣṇa speaks this verse. Give up rules and prohibitions. Give up prescribed acts and forbidden acts. “Should I take sannyāsa?” No. Give up the dharma of the sannyāsīs, renunciation as well as the dharma of the householders, enjoyment. Do not hanker to hear about dharma in the future, and forget what you have heard already. By all methods, by all bhāvas in the mind, such as dāsya and sakhya, taking support of me, surrender. You will be fearless by my mercy. You are not qualified for karma or jñāna. But if you identify with those processes and thus fear sin and continued saṁsāra because of neglect of duties and jñāna, I am here, to deliver you from those two fears.
Set down every rule-book and rumor of dharma and take exclusive shelter of Kṛṣṇa in the heart — wholehearted surrender is the one fearless path.
Practical Applications
  • Name one religious or self-improvement rule you are clinging to as a substitute for personal surrender, and consciously place it at Kṛṣṇa's feet today.
  • In one decision today, ignore what you have 'heard' from competing voices and ask only, 'What does sheltering in Kṛṣṇa within my heart require of me right now?'
  • Before sleep, speak the words 'mām ekam eva śaraṇam' and entrust one specific fear to Him by name.
Reflection Questions
  • Which 'codanā and praticodanā' — the prescriptions and counter-prescriptions of my world — am I still treating as more authoritative than the Lord seated in my own heart?
  • What would 'sarvātma-bhāvena' — surrender with my whole being — actually cost me this week, and where do I keep holding back a portion?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • Pick one influencer, feed, or peer voice whose 'injunctions' you have absorbed this month, mute it for a week, and replace that input with hearing about Kṛṣṇa from a devotee source.
  • Before your next exam or interview, instead of running through worst-case scenarios, take two minutes to consciously place the outcome in Kṛṣṇa's hands and act on His 'akuto-bhayaḥ' assurance.
  • When friends pressure you to define yourself by their categories — career track, relationship status, politics — quietly hold the verse's center: your real identity is as one who is taking shelter of Kṛṣṇa within.
householder
  • In your next major family decision — a move, a school, a job change — list the competing 'authorities' you are consulting, and ask which of them is actually subordinated to Kṛṣṇa as the final shelter.
  • Choose one financial fear you are managing through accumulation alone, and counterbalance it this month with a concrete act of dependence on Kṛṣṇa — a tithe, a service, a refusal of overtime that compromises sādhana.
  • Teach your children, by example more than words, that the family's ultimate refuge is not the house, the savings, or the school — but the Lord seated in everyone's heart.
senior
  • Identify one 'śrutam' — a lifetime of accumulated opinions, regrets, or worldviews — that you are still rehearsing, and deliberately set it down in favor of simple remembrance of Kṛṣṇa.
  • As bodily strength wanes, treat each loss as Kṛṣṇa Himself loosening your grip on 'codanā and praticodanā' so that exclusive shelter becomes natural rather than theoretical.
  • Mentor a younger devotee or family member not by transmitting your rules, but by pointing them past your example to the same Lord within their own heart whom you are learning to depend on.
Common Pitfalls
  • Reading 'abandon injunctions' as license to drop sādhana, regulative principles, or guru's instructions — when the verse is spoken to Uddhava, who is already fixed in devotional discipline.
  • Turning 'take shelter of Me alone' into a private, impersonalist interiority — forgetting that the Kṛṣṇa within the heart is the same personal Lord worshiped through bhakti and the association of His devotees.
  • Using 'akuto-bhayaḥ' as a slogan for emotional calm while still arranging one's life around material insurance policies rather than actual dependence on Him.
Discussion Prompts
  • Share one 'śrotavyaṁ' — something you keep listening to or planning to listen to — that competes with simple shelter in Kṛṣṇa; do the others in your group see it as harmless or as an obstacle?
  • Kṛṣṇa tells Uddhava to set aside Vedic injunctions, yet Prabhupāda insists on 'authorized regulated bhakti-yoga' — where in your own practice do you feel that tension, and how do you resolve it?
  • When have you experienced 'akuto-bhayaḥ' — fearlessness — in a concrete situation, and when have you only performed it outwardly while still afraid inside?
Role Play

One student plays a sincere seeker who has just read this verse and announces they are quitting their morning sādhana, japa rounds, and śāstra study because 'Kṛṣṇa said abandon all that and just surrender'; another student plays a senior devotee who must lovingly correct the misreading using the verse itself and Prabhupāda's purport, without crushing the seeker's enthusiasm for exclusive shelter.

Objections & Responses
  • This sounds like blind faith — abandon reasoning, abandon scripture, just surrender. Isn't that exactly the anti-intellectualism critics accuse religion of?
Kṛṣṇa is not telling a beginner to skip study; He is telling Uddhava, who has already exhausted philosophical analysis with Him, that intellect alone cannot deliver the heart. Surrender here is the mature fruit of inquiry, not its evasion — one still hears from guru, sādhu, and śāstra, but stops treating competing injunctions as final authority over the Lord within.
  • If Kṛṣṇa is 'within the heart of all conditioned souls,' why bother with a specific tradition, deity form, or guru — can't I just surrender to the Lord in my own heart, my own way?
The Lord within the heart is the same personal Kṛṣṇa who appeared in Vṛndāvana and who descended as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu; without the guidance of His pure devotees, the 'inner voice' quickly becomes the voice of one's own conditioning. Exclusive shelter is personal, not private — it is offered to Him in the form and process He Himself authorizes.
