In all the planetary systems, from the heavenly to the hellish, and for all of the great demigods who live for one thousand yuga cycles, there is fear of Me in My form of time. Even Brahmā, who possesses the supreme life span of 311,040,000,000,000 years, is also afraid of Me.

There are many statements throughout Vedic literature proving that even the great demigods fear the time potency of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Even in the heavenly planets there is no relief from the miseries of material life. No conditioned soul can live eternally, as clearly demonstrated by the deaths of Hiraṇyakaśipu and other demons. Since even the demigods fear the time potency of the Personality of Godhead, one may easily conclude that Kṛṣṇa is the Absolute Truth and that He is eternally the supreme controller of everything and everyone. Lord Kṛṣṇa is the only real shelter.

Translation
All the planetary systems and all of the great devatās who live for one thousand yuga cycles fear me. Even Brahmā, who possesses the supreme life span of 311,040,000,000,000 years, is afraid of me. Eternal existence of Svarga and other places, and of the protectors of those places, is rejected, even though they are said to be eternal in some scriptures just to satisfy materialistic persons according to the principle of tuṣyatu durjanaḥ: let the opponent be satisfied. Mad-bhayam means “they fear me.” Śruti says: bhīṣā’smād vātaḥ pavate, bhīṣodeti sūryaḥ | bhīṣā’smād agniś cendraś ca, mṛtyur dhāvati pañcamaḥ || In fear of the Lord the wind blows, and the sun rises. Out of fear of the Lord, Agni, Indra and death flee. Taittīrya Upanisad 2.8.1 By nature’s evidence of the Lord’s existence, atheism is rejected.
Even Brahmā, with his unimaginable lifespan, fears Kṛṣṇa as time — so take shelter of Him alone, the one refuge time cannot touch.
Practical Applications
  • Today, name one heavenly outcome you are chasing — promotion, comfort, status — and remind yourself it too will be eaten by time.
  • Begin your morning sādhana by acknowledging that Kṛṣṇa as kāla holds every breath, and offer the day's work to Him as the only stable shelter.
  • When fear of aging, loss, or death rises, refuse to argue it away with positive thinking; instead, turn to Kṛṣṇa and admit He alone stands outside time.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I quietly counting on a long, secure life to delay surrender — and what does it mean that even Brahmā cannot count on his?
  • If every system I am building will one day end in Kṛṣṇa's time-form, what in my life right now actually deserves the weight I am giving it?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • When you catch yourself thinking "I'll get serious about Kṛṣṇa later, after college / after I settle down," pause and remember that even Brahmā cannot count on later.
  • Notice how much of your social-media life is an attempt to feel permanent — likes, followers, streaks — and offer one small piece of that performance to Kṛṣṇa today instead.
  • When exam stress or breakup pain feels world-ending, locate it inside time: it will pass, but your relationship with Kṛṣṇa is what carries through every stage.
householder
  • When making a family or career decision driven by securing the future — house, savings, schools — ask which part of it is genuine duty and which part is denial of time.
  • Speak to your spouse and children today as souls whose time in this body is uncertain, and let that shape one concrete choice — a conversation, a forgiveness, a priority.
  • Refuse to use "providing for the family" as a reason to indefinitely postpone serious sādhana; schedule Kṛṣṇa into your week the way you schedule work deadlines.
senior
  • When the body's decline frightens you, do not paper over the fear; sit with it and let it drive you deeper into chanting and remembrance of Kṛṣṇa.
  • Loosen your grip on one attachment this week — a possession, an opinion, a role you have held — as practical preparation for the larger letting-go time is asking of you.
  • Mentor someone younger by honestly naming what time has taught you about Kṛṣṇa as shelter, rather than offering generic life advice they could find anywhere.
Common Pitfalls
  • Hearing this verse as morbid and pushing it away, instead of letting the fear of time mature into shelter-seeking in Kṛṣṇa.
  • Treating fear of time as anxiety to be managed by lifestyle and therapy, rather than as a signal pointing to the need for surrender.
  • Using the vastness of cosmic timescales as escapism — admiring the numbers about Brahmā while ignoring that my own short life is equally inside that time.
Discussion Prompts
  • Share one area of your life where you have been living as if time were not coming for it — and what changes if you take this verse seriously.
  • If even the demigods and Brahmā fear Kṛṣṇa as time, what does this say about the modern projects of life-extension, legacy, and securing the future?
  • Where do we, as practitioners, secretly prefer impersonal abstractions about eternity over the personal shelter of Kṛṣṇa described here?
Role Play

A classmate has just received a devastating medical diagnosis and tells you, "I always thought I had more time." One student plays the friend; another, a Gauḍīya practitioner who must speak honestly from this verse without sounding cold, dismissive, or preachy — offering Kṛṣṇa as shelter while honoring the friend's fear.

Objections & Responses
  • A God who makes even Brahmā afraid sounds like a tyrant, not someone I want to surrender to.
Kṛṣṇa as time is not a tyrant; He is the one honest mirror in a universe of denial. Every other shelter — body, position, planet — quietly fails us; only He names this plainly and then offers Himself as the refuge time cannot touch. Fear of Him is the beginning of real fearlessness, because it ends our false trust in things that were going to betray us anyway.
  • Modern science gives us much smaller timescales than this verse — why should I trust these numbers about Brahmā?
The verse is not asking you to first verify Brahmā's lifespan and then accept Kṛṣṇa; it is using the longest life conceivable to make a single point — even that is inside time, and time is Kṛṣṇa. Whatever timescale you trust, your own life sits well within it, and the same conclusion follows: only Kṛṣṇa stands outside time, and only He is real shelter.
