  • veda-uditam — enunciated in the Vedas
Compound: veda + udita (spoken). Bhagavān, the source of the Veda, models obedience to it. Gauḍīyas: pravartaka of dharma submits to dharma's letter — the supreme legislator under His own law (Gītā 4.7-8).
  • gṛham — home
Sanskrit for household. The gṛhastha-āśrama. Kṛṣṇa is shown here as the supreme gṛhastha — proof that household life, properly ordered toward Bhagavān, is no obstacle to the goal. Caitanya Mahāprabhu's gṛhastha disciples (Rāmānanda Rāya, Śivānanda Sena) inherited this image.
  • dharma-artha-kāmānām — of religiosity, prosperity and regulated desire
The standard tri-varga (three goals of life, dharma + artha + kāma). Gauḍīyas: even when achieved, the tri-varga is not the goal — mokṣa and beyond it prema is. But achieving them rightly is the gṛhastha's foundation; the chapter shows Kṛṣṇa modeling it.
  • satām gatiḥ — the goal of saintly devotees
satām (of the good, the sādhus) + gati (destination). A Bhāgavatam epithet for Kṛṣṇa: He Himself is the gati. The puruṣārtha and its giver are one. Caitanya-caritāmṛta: 'kṛṣṇa-prāpti — sei param-puruṣārtha.'
  • padam — the standard, the path
Sanskrit pada — foot, footprint, standard. Kṛṣṇa repeatedly demonstrated (ādarśayat muhuḥ) the standard. Acārya-līlā: Bhagavān instructs by being, not only by speaking. The Veda is His act before it is His word.
Thus observing the principles of duty enunciated in the Vedas, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the goal of the saintly devotees, repeatedly demonstrated how one can achieve at home the objectives of religiosity, economic development and regulated sense gratification.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Thus observing the principles of duty enunciated in the Vedas, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the goal of the saintly devotees, repeatedly demonstrated how one can achieve at home the objectives of religiosity, economic development and regulated sense gratification.
Commentary

He showed the house to be the place (padam) for achieving dharma artha and kama.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Having described Kṛṣṇa’s activities which clearly display his pastime nature, Śukadeva now describes how he gave happiness to all by being absorbed in Vedic dharma. He is the shelter of devotees absorbed in his pastimes constantly engaged in dharma like sacrifices prescribed by the Vedas. He showed the household goals of dharma, artha and kāma. He taught this to others since he is also the shelter of persons dedicate to dharma as well as of persons absorbed in his pastimes.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Though fixed in dharma, he delivered others by teaching dharma through his own conduct. In the way described, he performed dharma prescribed in the Vedas. He was the goal of the devotees, delivering bhakti by his mercy to the devotees. Or he was the goal for persons dedicated to dharma. By this he was to be attained by them. Or the goal was to give happiness to his devotees. He constantly performed dharma and constantly showed the goals (muhuḥ). This is to emphasize showing dharma.

Moksha
Kṛṣṇa observes Vedic principles of duty as the goal of saintly devotees. Even God models conformity to dharma as the showpiece example, not the exception.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I think I am above some basic dharma that Kṛṣṇa Himself observed?
  • What principle could I take up not because it suits me but because it honors the form?

Kṛṣṇa, observing the Veda's principles, demonstrated dharma-artha-kāma can all be reached inside the household. Bhagavān is not bypassing varṇāśrama; He is showing the gṛhastha that home, rightly held, is itself a path. Aiśvarya-rasa's pastoral side.
