  • pravavarṣa — He rained down
Perfect of pra + √vṛṣ (to rain). The exact verb for cloud-rain. Gauḍīyas read the image: Bhagavān is the meghaśyāma, and His giving falls on prajā the way water falls on earth.
  • kāmān — desirable things
Plural of kāma. Not kāma-as-lust but kāma-as-desired-objects. Bhagavān provides for legitimate desires; renunciation is not the only Bhāgavata mode.
  • yathā-kālam — at the proper time
Compound: yathā (as) + kāla (time). Right giving in right season. Gauḍīyas note: Bhagavān's giving is kāla-yukta, not capricious — the same orderliness as Indra's monsoon.
  • śraiṣṭhyam-āsthitaḥ — established in supremacy
Compound: śraiṣṭhya (preeminence) + āsthita (situated in). The chapter that began by asking 'who is supreme?' ends with Bhagavān 'situated in supremacy' on display. The verdict and the experience coincide.
The Lord having demonstrated His supremacy, at suitable times He showered down all desirable things upon the brāhmaṇas and His other subjects, just as Indra pours down his rain.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The Lord having demonstrated His supremacy, at suitable times He showered down all desirable things upon the brāhmaṇas and His other subjects, just as Indra pours down his rain.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

He showered fully, or constantly fulfilled all desires, supplying visible objects to everyone even the outcastes (ādiṣu). He did this at suitable times. An example is given to show the abundance. He showered abundance just as Indra showers water since he was full of all powers and qualities (bhagavān), the source of all avatāras. He was eternally situated with the highest excellence.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

He fulfilled everyone’s desires excellently (pra-vavarṣa) by giving what they desired (kāmān). He gave to brāhmaṇas, other varṇas, mixed varṇas and outcastes. He gave at the time that was proper to give (yathā kālam), just as Indra showers rain, because he was absorbed in manifesting unlimited powers (bhagavān) and was the source of all avatāras (kṛṣṇaḥ), from which he attained excellence or because he was fixed.

Having demonstrated His supremacy, at suitable times He showers desirable things on brāhmaṇas and others. Divine giving follows divine demonstration; first comes truth-revealing, then gift-giving.
Reflection Questions
  • What gifts in my life followed a hard truth that needed to be revealed first?
  • Where am I impatient for the gift while resisting the truth that precedes it?

Like Indra raining at the proper season, Bhagavān showered desirable things on the brāhmaṇas and prajā. Indra's rain is the standard śāstric image of dharma operating in season. Bhagavān's giving has the same regularity — and the same dependence: the field receives only because the cloud is willing.
