Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.89.19
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
sārasvatāḥ
—
the brāhmaṇas of the Sarasvatī
Adjective from Sarasvatī. The same sages who began the chapter in vitarka now end it in sevā. The Bhāgavatam never leaves śravaṇa in the head; it always lands at the feet.
-
saṁśaya-nuttaye
—
for the dispelling of doubt
Compound: saṁśaya (doubt) + nutti (removal). The sages' work is for nṛṇām — for human beings, not for themselves. Gauḍīyas read this as the model for ācārya-paramparā: settle the tattva and publish the settlement.
-
pada-ambhoja-sevayā
—
by service to the lotus feet
Compound: pada (foot) + ambhoja (lotus) + sevā (service). The signature Vaiṣṇava idiom. Settlement of doubt does not produce silence; it produces sevā.
-
tat-gatim
—
His destination
Compound: tat (His) + gati (goal). The Sārasvatas attained Vaikuṇṭha. Gauḍīyas note: the chapter that began by asking 'who is greatest?' ends with its inquirers entering the answer's abode.
Thus engaged in dispelling (nuttaye) the doubts of men, the sages attained liberation.
After describing what the sages said, Śukadeva now speaks. Having determined this (ittham), for dispelling doubts of the people, and verifying this by scripture, by serving his feet they realized him. Or they realized the Lord in order to dispel people’s doubts.
Having determined the supreme position of the Lord, the doubts of people were destroyed. By serving the lotus feet, by prema-bhakti, thinking of Viṣṇu as the supreme Lord (puruṣasya), they attained the indescribably goal of the Lord or the goal of service to him (tat), Vaikuṇṭha. This is a general statement, for Bhṛgu and others, being Prajāpatis, remain until the universe is destroyed. Or other brāhmaṇas, those residing on the bank of the Sarasvatī River, attained Vaikuṇṭha.
- Where might my own clarification be a service to my community's confusion?
- How do I distinguish helpful theological labor from intellectual showing-off?
The Sārasvata brāhmaṇas conclude their inquiry and immediately move from conclusion to service — pāda-padma-sevā. Gauḍīya tradition treats this as the only valid signature of true tattva-knowledge: the moment a conclusion is reached, it expresses itself as sevā at the lotus feet.
