  • praṇata-ārti-hā — the destroyer of the distress of the surrendered
Compound: praṇata (surrendered, bowed) + ārti (distress) + hā (slayer). One of Bhagavān's principal epithets. CC Madhya 19.156 — ārti-hā-bhagavān gauracandra. The same name applies to Kṛṣṇa and to Mahāprabhu in Gauḍīya theology.
  • pāṇim — his hand
Accusative of pāṇi — hand. The bhakta's hand, grasped by Bhagavān's hand (pāṇinā), is the Vaiṣṇava signature of sakhya — even more intimate, vivāha-like (the wedding rite is pāṇi-grahaṇa). Gauḍīyas note: Kṛṣṇa's hand on a brāhmaṇa's hand equals the highest of upacāras.
  • prahasan — smiling broadly
Present participle of pra + √has (to laugh, smile). The same prahasya that runs through Kṛṣṇa's līlā in Vraja. Mahāprabhu also is described prahasan. Bhagavān's default expression toward His bhaktas is a smile.
Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: After hearing Śrutadeva speak these words, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who relieves His surrendered devotees’ distress, took Śrutadeva’s hand in His own and, smiling, spoke to him as follows.

Ācārya Viśvanātha comments that Lord Kṛṣṇa took Śrutadeva’s hand and smiled as a gesture of friendship, to tell Him, “Yes, you know the truth about Me, and I also know all about you. So now I will tell you something special.”

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: After hearing Śrutadeva speak these words, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who relieves His surrendered devotees' distress, took Śrutadeva's hand in His own and, smiling, spoke to him as follows.
Commentary

He took Srutadeva’s hand in his, indicating that he would drown him in sakhya rasa when he would hear the Lord’s clever words. The Lord laughed. "You have clearly understood all about me. What should I, knowing all about you, teach you?"

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Hearing his words with great attention (upa—karṇya), the Lord smiled in joy (pra—hasan) and spoke, since he takes away all suffering of his devotees (praṇātārti-hā), even if they only offered respects once. Therefore he took Śrutadeva’s hand. The word ha indicates joy.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Hearing his words with great attention (upa—karṇya), the Lord smiled in joy (pra—hasan) and spoke, since he takes away all suffering of his devotees or all jīvas (praṇātārti-hā), or those who only offered respects once, because he is directly the supreme Lord (bhagavān). Or he was Kṛṣṇa, who manifests unlimited powers. He took Śrutadeva’s hand in his. This shows his special affection for him.

Jiva
After hearing Śrutadeva, Kṛṣṇa speaks. The Lord listens fully before responding — even God models that listening precedes teaching.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I respond before fully hearing?
  • How might letting another finish their full prayer reshape my answer?

Kṛṣṇa, smiling, takes Śrutadeva's hand in His own. Bhagavān's hand on the bhakta's hand — small contact, infinite content. The chapter's climax is a hand-clasp; what follows is His vacana on brāhmaṇa-mahimā.
