  • śṛṇvatām — of those who are hearing
Genitive plural participle of √śru (to hear). The first of the nine limbs of bhakti. Gauḍīyas treat śravaṇa as the seed-limb — once Kṛṣṇa-kathā is heard, the others sprout.
  • saṁvadatām — conversing
Genitive plural participle of sam + √vad (to speak together). Mutual discussion among devotees. Gauḍīyas count this as a separate limb — saṅgha-sevā — the heart of nāma-saṅkīrtana movement.
  • amala-ātmanām — whose minds are spotless
Compound: amala (without dirt) + ātman (self, mind). 'Spotless-minded.' The condition for Bhagavān's pratyakṣa-prakāśa in the heart. Gauḍīyas: bhakti itself cleanses (CC Madhya 22.107 — nitya-siddha kṛṣṇa-prema śravaṇādi-śuddha citte).
  • bhāsi — You appear
Present 2nd singular of √bhās (to shine). Bhagavān 'shines' within the bhakta's heart — the same verb used of the sun. Gauḍīyas read this as Bhagavān's self-revelation; He is not summoned, He chooses to shine.
You reveal Yourself within the hearts of those persons of pure consciousness who constantly hear about You, chant about You, worship You, glorify You and converse with one another about You.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
You reveal Yourself within the hearts of those persons of pure consciousness who constantly hear about You, chant about You, worship You, glorify You and converse with one another about You.
Commentary

"But person like you who are engaged in hearing and singing about me certainly attain my presence." Srutadeva answers in this verse. "You appear within those persons who discuss among the devotees about you (samvadatam). But they are also devoid of all contamination such as envy (amala atmanam). But I am full of contamination. That you have appeared in person here is a show of your wonderful quality of mercy."

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The word śāśvat (constantly) should be applied to all the verbs. You appear in the hearts of pure-hearted persons who constantly hear, glorify, worship, offer respects by lying on the ground, and speak to each other about you. Or purifying the heart by proper actions, one can then hearing, glorify etc. He appears privately (antaḥ) in the heart or he appears in the hearts of those who chant (antaḥ).

You reveal Yourself within hearts that constantly hear, chant, and reflect on You. Internal presence follows external practice — what we keep practicing, He keeps becoming visible in.
Reflection Questions
  • What practice would I have to renew daily for His revealing within to deepen?
  • Where do I expect inner revelation without sustained outer practice?

Bhagavān shines within the heart of those who constantly hear, chant, worship, glorify, and discuss Him together. The five activities of the verse are the five legs of saṅkīrtana — bhakti is plural by nature.

The nine limbs of bhakti

SB 7.5.23 — śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ smaraṇaṁ pāda-sevanam | arcanaṁ vandanaṁ dāsyaṁ sakhyam ātma-nivedanam — Prahlāda's enumeration of the nine limbs of bhakti. Śrutadeva's verse here is its informal echo: śṛṇvatām, gadatām, arcatām, abhivandatām, saṁvadatām.

Gauḍīyas take saṅkīrtana — particularly saṁvadatām (mutual discussion) — as the yuga-dharma of Kali. Caitanya Mahāprabhu canonized this by personal example: hearing, singing, and conversing-among-bhaktas. Śrutadeva is already practicing the yuga-dharma.
