  • nanarta ha — he danced
Perfect of √nṛt (to dance) + ha (the asseverative particle marking memorable past action). Gauḍīyas read this as bhakta-spontaneous-nāṭya — the same nāṭya that, in CC, defines Caitanya's saṅkīrtana movement.
  • saṁhṛṣṭaḥ — delighted
Past participle of sam + √hṛṣ (to be thrilled, with hair standing on end). The sāttvika-bhāva of horripilation. Gauḍīya rasa-theory catalogs eight sāttvika-bhāvas; romāñca (hair standing) is one. Śrutadeva enters that state at darśana.
  • dhunvan — waving
Present participle of √dhū (to shake). The bhakta waves his upper-cloth as part of dancing. Gauḍīyas note this gesture is identical to the kīrtana-dance of Mahāprabhu's bhaktas — chaddha-uddhūnana, cloth-fluttering.
  • janakaḥ — Bahulāśva (the Janaka-descendant)
Lit. 'father, descendant of the Janaka line.' The Bhāgavata uses the dynastic name to equate the two welcomings — the king (janakaḥ) did this much, the brāhmaṇa did the same (yathā janakaḥ). Sama-darśana confirmed by sama-svāgata.
Śrutadeva received Lord Acyuta into his home with as much enthusiasm as that shown by King Bahulāśva. After bowing down to the Lord and the sages, Śrutadeva began to dance with great joy, waving his shawl.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śrutadeva received Lord Acyuta into his home with as much enthusiasm as that shown by King Bahulāśva. After bowing down to the Lord and the sages, Śrutadeva began to dance with great joy, waving his shawl.
Commentary

Srutadeva, holding his cloth in his hands above his head and waving it in joy began to dance when Krsna arrived at his house.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Like the king (janako yathā) he had increased bhakti, with tears in his eyes and joy in his heart. Instead of munīn sometimes munīn ca is seen. The word ha indicates joy.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Śrutadeva bowed to the Lord full of all powers (acyutam) who had come to his house with the sages, great devotees, like Bahulāśva, he had increased bhakti, with tears in his eyes and joy in his heart.

Jiva
Śrutadeva receives Him with equal enthusiasm. The humble brāhmaṇa shows the king-level welcome too — devotional dignity is not about wealth.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I dim my welcome of God because I think my resources are too small?
  • How does Śrutadeva's example reframe what 'fitting' welcome of God looks like?

Now Bhagavān is also at Śrutadeva's hut. The same Kṛṣṇa, no diminished portion. Śrutadeva, overcome, begins to dance, waving his cloth — a one-man kīrtana in the doorway. Joy is the official greeting of Bhagavān.

Caitanya Mahāprabhu's dancing arrival

Caitanya-caritāmṛta records that when Mahāprabhu first reached Purī, Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya stepped outside and was met with the dancing of the Lord Himself; later it was Caitanya's devotees who danced upon His arrival at every village. Dance is the body's reply to Bhagavān's arrival.

Śrutadeva's nanarta ha here is the original of every kīrtana-naṭṭana in Caitanya's tradition. Gauḍīyas hold dance as a limb of bhakti — saṅkīrtana is by definition the saṅghika-nartana of Bhagavān's names.
