  • bhūman — O omnipresent one
Vocative of bhūman ('the Vast'). Upaniṣadic name — Chāndogya 7.23: yo vai bhūmā tat sukham. Bahulāśva addresses Kṛṣṇa as the Vast — and immediately asks Him to be small enough to fit in his house. Both true.
  • pāda-rajasā — with the dust of Your feet
Compound: pāda (foot) + rajas (dust). Kṛṣṇa's foot-dust is the substance Brahmā prays for in CC Ādi 6.36. Bahulāśva asks for it to sanctify Nimi's dynasty — the dust is the gold of dynastic continuity in Vaiṣṇava reckoning.
  • punīhi — please sanctify
Imperative of √pū (to purify). The verb of pavitra-karaṇa — the action of making holy. Gauḍīyas note that purification by Bhagavān's foot-dust requires no other ritual; presence is sufficient.
  • nimeḥ — of King Nimi
Genitive of Nimi — founder-king of Mithilā, ancestor of Janaka. Bahulāśva extends the request beyond himself — bhakti's instinct is to lift the whole vaṁśa. Gauḍīyas teach this as kula-mokṣa, the family-redemption a bhakta effects.
  • kulam — the dynasty
Nominative of kula — lineage, family. The dynasty of Nimi receives sanctification when Kṛṣṇa's foot-dust touches its head. Gauḍīyas: a bhakta in a family lifts the whole kula across generations.
Please stay a few days in our house, along with these brāhmaṇas, O all-pervading one, and with the dust of Your feet sanctify this dynasty of Nimi.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Please stay a few days in our house, along with these brāhmaṇas, O all-pervading one, and with the dust of Your feet sanctify this dynasty of Nimi.
Commentary

You, with (sametah) the sages should stay in my house and purify it with your feet.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Having praised the Lord, he now humbly makes his request. In saying, “Stay for some days” he shows his modesty. O great Lord (bhūman)! Though you are complete in all respects, out of mercy fulfill my desire. Stay in my house with the sages. Instead of nivasa sometimes nivasan is seen. Nimi was also your devotee.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Having praised the Lord, he now humbly makes his request. In saying, “Stay for some days” he shows his modesty. Not specifying a short time, he hints that the Lord should stay forever. “Considering the Yadus and others, I cannot ignore staying at other places also.” O all-pervading Lord! By your śakti you can stay anything else as well as here. Purify this dynasty involved with impersonal philosophy of advaita ideas. Or the dynasty has committed offense because Nimi caused men’s eyes to blink. Thus the gopīs’ vision of Kṛṣṇa was obstructed. Purify our family of that offense.

Please stay a few days; with the dust of Your feet bless our home. The longest possible visit, the deepest possible blessing — humble greed for God is virtuous.
Reflection Questions
  • What do I dare ask God to stay long enough to do?
  • Where do I rush God's visits because I doubt He would actually linger?

The king begs the omnipresent Lord to stay 'a few days.' But Kṛṣṇa is everywhere already — what Bahulāśva asks for is the pratyakṣa-darśana variant of His omnipresence. Bhakti translates everywhere into here.
