  • śrutadevaḥ — Śrutadeva
Compound: śruta (heard, i.e., the Vedas) + deva (god, here Bhagavān). 'One whose deva is what is heard from the Veda' — a name that anticipates the chapter's climax (v. 52, 54): śravaṇa of the sages is darśana of the Lord.
  • kṛṣṇa-eka-bhaktyā — by exclusive devotion to Kṛṣṇa
Compound: kṛṣṇa + eka (one, sole) + bhaktyā (with devotion). The technical Gauḍīya term ananyā-bhakti is here phrased as kṛṣṇa-eka-bhakti — devotion to Kṛṣṇa alone, the criterion of the uttama-adhikārī.
  • pūrṇa-arthaḥ — full in all goals of desire
Compound: pūrṇa (full) + arthaḥ (purpose, wealth). The same word the Brahma-saṁhitā uses for Govinda's own self-sufficiency. The devotee is pūrṇa-artha by participation — he is filled with what fills Bhagavān.
  • alampaṭaḥ — not desirous of sense gratification
Lit. 'not lampaṭa' — not a libertine. The privative names the bhakta by what he is not — he does not chase sense-objects because his rasa is already located in Kṛṣṇa-kathā.
  • kaviḥ — learned, a seer
From √kav (to praise, to see). Not 'poet' in the modern sense but the seer-singer of the Vedic tradition. Gauḍīyas honor Vyāsa, Śuka, and the Six Gosvāmīs as kavis — those who see Kṛṣṇa and sing what they see.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: There was a devotee of Kṛṣṇa’s known as Śrutadeva, who was a first-class brāhmaṇa. Perfectly satisfied by rendering unalloyed devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa, he was peaceful, learned and free from sense gratification.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: There was a devotee of Kṛṣṇa's known as Śrutadeva, who was a first-class brāhmaṇa. Perfectly satisfied by rendering unalloyed devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa, he was peaceful, learned and free from sense gratification.
Commentary

Here, Sukadeva tells a special story that he spontaneously recollected, without being asked, which he personally witnessed. The brahmana was a devotee of Krsna, who took Krsna as his master (krsnasya).

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Though not requested, Śukadeva now recites a pastime that he heard about, attractive because it shows Kṛṣṇa’s direct mercy to his devotee in meeting that devotee. A new topic is introduced with the words “Śukadeva said.” Śrutadeva was the best of brāhmaṇas, fully dedicated to Kṛṣṇa. He was fully endowed with artha, dharma, and kāma because of his pure bhakti (eka-bhaktyā) to Kṛṣṇa alone, even though he did not desire these things. His heart was fixed on Kṛṣṇa (śāntaḥ) because he had all knowledge (kaviḥ). He was not attracted to material enjoyment.

Related verses
Śrutadeva, a humble brāhmaṇa devotee, is introduced. The narrative shifts from kings and princesses to a quiet householder — devotional life is led by both kinds of devotees equally.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose 'quiet' devotion in my life have I overlooked because it is not dramatic?
  • Where do I overvalue the heroic and undervalue the steady?

Now the camera moves from Dvārakā to Mithilā — from royal wedding to brāhmaṇa hut. Śrutadeva enters the verse like a lamp in a quiet room. The first half of the chapter showed Kṛṣṇa's sanction working through warriors; the second will show it working through one poor brāhmaṇa.

Pūrṇa-artha — full in all wealth

Śukadeva names Śrutadeva pūrṇa-artha — 'full in all goals.' The same word Kṛṣṇa applied to Himself in Bhagavad-gītā 3.22 (na me pārthāsti kartavyam… nānavāptam avāptavyam). The brāhmaṇa is pūrṇa not by ownership but by ekānta-bhakti.

Gauḍīyas line this verse up with the description of Sudāmā (10.80–81) and of Kuchela in the Bhāgavata-māhātmya: the poor devotee is the model śravaṇa-pātra, more dear to Kṛṣṇa than the rich king. The chapter will demonstrate this in v. 26.
