to them who are honored .
  • sahasā — immediately, at once
No deliberation, no protocol weighed. The instantaneous rising is itself the teaching: brāhmaṇa-darśana commands the body before the mind catches up.
  • praṇemuḥ — they bowed down
From pra + √nam (to bend). Daṇḍavat-praṇāma is the formal full obeisance. Gauḍīyas treat it as the body's first act of śaraṇāgati — the limbs leading the heart.
  • vanditān — honored, worshipable
Past participle of √vand (to praise, salute). The ṛṣis are not merely respected; they are vandya — fit objects of vandana. Gauḍīyas list guru-vandana as the first limb of pañcāṅga-bhakti.
  • viśva — by the whole universe
The ṛṣis are honored by the universe — not by a sect. The qualifier raises brāhmaṇa-pūjā out of cultural custom into a feature of the cosmos as Bhagavān has arranged it.
As soon as they saw the sages approaching, the kings and other gentlemen who had been seated immediately stood up, including the Pāṇḍava brothers and Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. They all then bowed down to the sages, who are honored throughout the universe.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
As soon as they saw the sages approaching, the kings and other gentlemen who had been seated immediately stood up, including the Pāṇḍava brothers and Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. They all then bowed down to the sages, who are honored throughout the universe.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Seeing the sages everyone rose immediately, without even thinking. If they had not been eager at the coming of the sages they would not have shown such behavior as immediately rising from their seats. Not only that they came forward and personally brought them to the assembly, as will be described. Not only the kings, but Nārada and priests rose and offered respects since the sages were honored by the universe, even by the Lord.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The kings rose from their seats. Some kings and ministers were not seated but standing. Others present were the kings’ priests. Even Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, Lords of the universe, offered respects with great devotion since the sages were respected by the universe.

Kings and gentlemen rise to greet the sages. Even worldly authority must stand when spiritual authority enters. True hierarchy gives spirit precedence over power.
Reflection Questions
  • Whom do I rise for in my life, and whom should I rise for that I have been ignoring?
  • Where am I letting status reverse the proper order of reverence?

When the lamps of a temple courtyard come on, even the king rises from his seat. Kṛṣṇa Himself standing up for the ṛṣis is that ārati: He honors His own representatives because the very order He is protecting requires that brāhmaṇas be seen first.

Kṛṣṇa standing for Sudāmā

In SB 10.80, Kṛṣṇa rises from His couch, runs forward, and embraces His poor brāhmaṇa friend Sudāmā — sets him on His own seat, washes his feet with His own hands.

Gauḍīyas pair that scene with this one: the standard Kṛṣṇa Himself models for the Yadu kings and the Pāṇḍavas is that brāhmaṇa-pūjā is performed in person, not by proxy, no matter one's station.
