  • patnī-saṁyāja — the ritual in which sponsor and wife offer together
patnī + saṁyāja (joint offering). One of the closing rites of large yajñas. Gauḍīyas note that the ritual codifies what bhakti everywhere asserts — the householder is dharmically a couple, not an individual.
  • avabhṛthyaiḥ — the final ritual baths
Instrumental plural — from ava (down) + √bhṛ (to bear). The sponsor's closing bath that carries the rite's residual energy into water. Gauḍīyas read avabhṛtha as the sealing seal — yajña ends with water as it began with fire.
  • rāma-hrade — in Lord Paraśurāma's lake
rāma (Paraśurāma) + hrada (lake). Samanta-pañcaka. Gauḍīyas note that yajña sealed in an avatāra's lake compounds its weight: Bhagavān's water completing Bhagavān's father's offering.
  • yajamāna — the sponsor of the sacrifice
From √yaj. The one for whom the yajña is performed. Gauḍīyas distinguish the yajamāna (agent) from the ṛtvik (technician) — the agent's interior orientation is what makes the rite efficacious.
After supervising the patnī-saṁyāja and avabhṛthya rituals, the great brāhmaṇa sages bathed in Lord Paraśurāma’s lake with the sponsor of the sacrifice, Vasudeva, who led them.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya

Sages bathe in the holy waters after concluding the rites. Ritual ends with cleansing — every undertaking deserves a clear close, not just an open beginning.
Reflection Questions
  • What sacred undertaking of mine never received its proper closing?
  • How could a small closing ritual mark the end of my current spiritual season?

The patnī-saṁyāja and avabhṛthya — the rituals in which the sponsor offers with his wife and then takes the closing bath — are the suturing stitches of the yajña. With these complete, Vasudeva leads the sages in bathing in Lord Paraśurāma's lake: bhagavat-avatāra's water completing the work of yajña on Bhagavān's own field.

Paraśurāma's lakes

Paraśurāma, after annihilating the kṣatriyas twenty-one times, performed his expiatory rituals at Kurukṣetra and is said to have created five lakes — Samanta-pañcaka — from the blood of the kings.

Gauḍīyas note that the very water of Vasudeva's avabhṛthya-bath is sanctified by an earlier avatāra's tapas; the geography is layered with Bhagavān's prior interventions.
