  • kṛṣṇa-devatāḥ — whose exclusive Deity is Kṛṣṇa
Compound: kṛṣṇa + devatāḥ (whose deity is). Ananya-bhāva — exclusive worship. Gauḍīyas locate the heart of bhakti here: not Kṛṣṇa among others, but Kṛṣṇa alone as iṣṭa-devatā. This is the doctrinal seed of svayaṁ-bhagavān-tattva.
  • anujñātāḥ — given permission
Past participle of anu-√jñā. The Vṛṣṇis wait for Kṛṣṇa's anujñā even for a meal. Gauḍīya sevā: nothing initiated without His sanction; the devotee is always under His instruction, never above it.
  • snigdha-chāyā — cool shade
Compound: snigdha (smooth, cooling, affectionate) + chāyā (shade). Snigdha also carries the rasa-sense of affection — the very trees offer vātsalya. Vṛndāvana's kalpa-vṛkṣas in their Kurukṣetra echo.
  • aṅghripa — tree (lit. 'drinking by the foot')
Compound: aṅghri (foot) + pa (drinker). Beautiful Sanskrit kenning — a tree drinks through its feet (roots). The Vṛṣṇis sit at the feet of trees that themselves sit at the feet of the earth; everyone in this verse is humbly footed.
Then, with the permission of Lord Kṛṣṇa, their sole object of worship, the Vṛṣṇis ate breakfast and sat down at their leisure beneath trees that gave cooling shade.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Then, with the permission of Lord Kṛṣṇa, their sole object of worship, the Vṛṣṇis ate breakfast and sat down at their leisure beneath trees that gave cooling shade.
Commentary

They sat down comfortably at the bases of trees with cool shade.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

After describing activities on the day of the eclipse, now Śukadeva describes activities on the next day. They asked for permission to end the vrata and received it from Kṛṣṇa, since Kṛṣṇa was their object of worship.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

This verse describes other activities on the day of the eclipse. The word ca means “but” to describe other details. Taking permission from Kṛṣṇa, or going to their individual places, they ate, for Kṛṣṇa was their deity. And with his permission they relaxed in the shade of trees, while friends came and went.

Jiva
With Kṛṣṇa's permission, they ate breakfast and rested under shade trees. Ordinary rest, taken with the Lord's permission, becomes sanctified. Permission-seeking is itself an act of devotion.
Reflection Questions
  • Where could I add a small 'with Your permission' to ordinary acts?
  • How does that simple inner gesture change the act?

Children eat only with their father's blessing — until He nods, the plates wait. The Vṛṣṇis treat Kṛṣṇa as the source of every permission; even sitting down in shade is taken as His allowance.
