  • guru - veśmani — in the home of our spiritual master
Compound: guru + veśman (home). The home of the guru as a sacred location — the dwelling itself is sevā-kṣetra. Gauḍīyas: parikrāmaṇa around the guru's residence is itself a recognized aṅga of bhakti.
  • anugraheṇa — by the mercy
Instrumental of anugraha — grace, favor (anu + √grah, 'taking-along'). The verse pairs it with guroḥ: by the guru's mercy. Gauḍīyas: anugraha is the Vaiṣṇava-grace word; this verse is the scriptural warrant for the principle 'no guru, no grace.'
  • eva — simply
Restrictive particle: only this, nothing more. The Lord narrows the cause of fulfillment to guru-anugraha alone. Gauḍīyas: the eva is doctrinally heavy.
  • pūrṇaḥ — fulfilled
Adjective: full, complete. Pūrṇatva — fullness. Gauḍīyas: bhakta's pūrṇatva is not Advaitin completeness-in-Brahman but completeness-in-relationship — full because in service to the Person.
  • praśāntaye — for attaining total peace
Dative of praśānti. The final fruit named here is praśānti — total peace. Gauḍīyas: this is bhakta's śānti, the calm of completed relationship, not the cessation of the self.
[Lord Kṛṣṇa continued:] We had many similar experiences while living in our spiritual master’s home. Simply by the grace of the spiritual master a person can fulfill life’s purpose and attain eternal peace.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
[Lord Kṛṣṇa continued:] We had many similar experiences while living in our spiritual master's home. Simply by the grace of the spiritual master a person can fulfill life's purpose and attain eternal peace.
Commentary

Living in the gurukula many such incidents happened to us.

By mercy of guru one becomes full of the greatest happiness (praśāṇtaye). Or being full of mercy one becomes happy.

Concepts
Jiva
Simply by guru's grace one fulfills life's purpose and attains eternal peace. The teacher's grace, not the student's intellect, is what completes the work.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I depending on intellect when guru's grace is the actual mechanism?
  • How do I make myself available to receive that grace?

A man recalls many small mornings in his teacher's house and realizes the whole of his peace came from them: Kṛṣṇa names guru-anugraha as the engine of pūrṇatva. Not effort, not learning, not even bhakti-without-guru — the grace of the guru is what makes a person whole.
