Important Words
-
govinde
—
when Govinda
Locative absolute. The name Govinda — He who pleases (vinda) the cows (go) — is used here precisely as Kṛṣṇa plays the part of a grieving son. Gauḍīyas savor this: even mid-grief, He is still go-vinda, still the cowherd whose every act is rasa.
-
saubha-rāṭ
—
the lord of Saubha
Repeated again. The Bhāgavatam keeps reattaching Śālva to his vehicle, never letting him stand free — the asura is always smaller than the toy he rides.
-
vasudevam iva
—
as if Vasudeva
Phrase: Vasudevam (Kṛṣṇa's father) + iva (as if). The iva is decisive — Vyāsa preempts the illusion by labeling it iva, "only seemingly." The Bhāgavatam refuses to let the reader, even momentarily, believe what Kṛṣṇa pretends to.
-
ānīya
—
bringing forward
Gerund of ā + √nī — to lead, to bring. Demonic theater requires bringing the false object visibly into stage — māyā cannot work in pure suggestion; it needs a body, even a fabricated one.
After Govinda spoke these words, the master of Saubha again appeared, apparently leading Vasudeva before the Lord. Śālva then spoke as follows.
Gauḍīya Ācāryas
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura
Gauḍīya
Translation
After Govinda spoke these words, the master of Saubha again appeared, apparently leading Vasudeva before the Lord. Śālva then spoke as follows.
Jīva Gosvāmī
Gauḍīya
Commentary
Sālva again appeared, coming close. What did he do? He brought some form looking like Vasudeva.
Śrīdhara Svāmī
Gauḍīya
Commentary
Govinda, the king of the cows, spoke. This indicates his affection for his devotees. Śālva again approached, bringing a form similar to Vasudeva. He spoke to Kṛṣṇa, whose heart was attracted by sorrow. Śālva, full of illusory power (saḥ), spoke.

Personal Guidance
Śālva appeared with what looked like Vasudeva — a created illusion to break the Lord's heart. The cruelest illusions are tailored to our specific loves.
Reflection Questions
- What custom-built illusion has been tailored to my specific attachments?
- What practice keeps me anchored when the illusion is precisely my shape?
Analogy
Govinda has barely finished speaking when the saubha-rāṭ reappears, leading what looks like Vasudeva, and announces his next move. Asurī-māyā loves to give the appearance of having heard the devotee's lament and now offering proof. Illusion's escalation tracks the devotee's emotional response.
