  • siṣicuḥ — they squirted
Perfect of √sic (to sprinkle, pour). The festival's water-sport. In verse 37 the same root-cluster reappears — but as Maya Dānava's illusion. Same element, different frame.
  • klinna-ambarāḥ — drenched garments
Compound: klinna (wet) + ambara (cloth). Wet cloth clings — and in verse 32 Duryodhana's heart will cling to Draupadī. The chapter's symbolic clothing-economy runs from this verse to his fall.
  • autsukya — due to excitement
From utsuka (eager). The pure eagerness of festival joy. Gauḍīyas mark utsukatā as one of bhāva's sañcāri-bhāvas when Kṛṣṇa is the object; here it is wholesome but worldly.
  • kṣobham-dadhuḥ — created agitation
Verb phrase: dadhuḥ (they placed) + kṣobham (agitation). The verse warns: the same scene that delights the pure agitates the contaminated. Same water; different mirror.
  • mala — dirty (consciousness)
From a synonym-pair specifying mala-āśayāḥ — those of dirty heart. The Bhāgavatam quietly names Duryodhana's class without naming him. The chapter is showing us, before saying so, why he cannot enjoy the festival.
As the queens squirted water from syringes at their brothers-in-law and other male companions, their own garments became drenched, revealing their arms, breasts, thighs and waists. In their excitement, the flowers fell from their loosened braids. By these charming pastimes they agitated those with contaminated consciousness.

Śrīla Prabhupāda writes: “Such behavior between pure males and females is enjoyable, but persons who are materially contaminated become lustful.”

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
As the queens squirted water from syringes at their brothers-in-law and other male companions, their own garments became drenched, revealing their arms, breasts, thighs and waists. In their excitement, the flowers fell from their loosened braids. By these charming pastimes they agitated those with contaminated consciousness.
Commentary

They sprinkled water on their husbands using leather bags filled with water (drtibhih). These actions generated lusty thoughts in person like Duryodhana, but not in pure persons.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The limbs which were drenched are described: breasts, thighs and waists. But being absorbed in spraying water with enthusiasm, their braids came undone and the garlands fell off their braids. Another version has kavarāḥ patanāna-mālyāḥ. Those with contaminated minds like Duryodhana became agitated but not the righteous, what to speak of the husbands and their brothers.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Draupadī and others sprinkled water on Kṛṣṇa. Rukmiṇī and others sprinkled brothers-in-law. Because of their damp cloth, their breasts, thighs and waists of their bodies (gātra) became revealed, or their breasts, thighs, waists and all limbs became revealed. Or though their clothing was wet, their breasts, etc. were not revealed (avivṛta). Because their hair came undone, their garlands fell off, because of their absorption in sprinkling water. The descriptive terms successively indicate more absorption in sprinkling. By these sprinkling pastimes filled with excellent rasa, they produced grief because of intolerance (kṣobham) in Duryodhana and others, but not in the devotees.

Related verses
Queens squirted water from syringes; their soaked garments revealed forms; charming pastimes agitated those with contaminated consciousness. The same scene is innocent to the pure and disturbing to the impure; consciousness shapes perception.
Reflection Questions
  • Where might my discomfort with a scene reveal more about my consciousness than about the scene?
  • What inner purification would let me see what is actually before me?

The same water that the queens spray in play will, in a few verses, become the illusion-pool that drowns Duryodhana. The chapter is teaching us to read fluid carefully: water in bhakti is sacrament, water in envy is humiliation.
