  • kṛṣṇa - anumoditaḥ — sanctioned by Lord Kṛṣṇa
Compound: Kṛṣṇa + anu (along with) + modita (gladdened, approved). Anumodana — the Lord's glad permission — is the Gauḍīya criterion for whether a karma will yield bhakti-result. Yudhiṣṭhira initiates only after this nod.
  • yajñiye — appropriate for the sacrifice
Locative of yajñiya. The right moment, place, and instruments are themselves a form of yajña's body. Vaidika culture: yajña is not a mood you summon but a configuration you enter.
  • ṛtvijaḥ — sacrificial priests
From ṛtu (season) + √yaj — those who sacrifice in season. The four classical ṛtviks (hotṛ, adhvaryu, udgātṛ, brahmā) each carry a Veda. The chapter is establishing the orthodox apparatus before the unorthodox honoring of Kṛṣṇa breaks through it.
  • brahma - vādinaḥ — expert authorities on the Vedas
Compound: brahma (Veda, Absolute) + vādin (one who speaks). The fully-qualified Vedic speakers. The Bhāgavatam stages the scene with them on hand so that Sahadeva's later declaration — that Kṛṣṇa Himself is the heart of all Veda — cannot be dismissed as ignorant enthusiasm.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Having said this, King Yudhiṣṭhira waited until the proper time for the sacrifice was at hand. Then with Lord Kṛṣṇa’s permission he selected suitable priests, all expert authorities on the Vedas, to execute the sacrifice.

The great Bhāgavatam commentator Śrīdhara Svāmī explains that the proper time for the sacrifice mentioned here was the spring.

Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Having said this, King Yudhiṣṭhira waited until the proper time for the sacrifice was at hand. Then with Lord Kṛṣṇa's permission he selected suitable priests, all expert authorities on the Vedas, to execute the sacrifice.
Commentary

At the time proper for sacrifice, the beginning of spring time, Yduhisthira with Krsna’s permission appointed suitable brahmanas for the sacrifice.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Determining the auspicious time for the sacrifice, having made his request, he selected priests. Brahma-vādinaḥ means “dedicated to studying the Vedas.”

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

After praising the Lord and completely other duties, when the proper time arrived for the sacrifice, he selected priests, after gaining permission from Kṛṣṇa who was requested to appear in this world as bhagavān (krṣṇa), in order to please him, and to perfect all actions done, and to increase the enthusiasm of brāhmaṇas, since he was the son of Prthā, a great devotee of Kṛṣṇa. This indicates that Yudhiṣṭhira was knowledgeable and skillful in all actions. Brahma-vādinaḥ means “dedicated to studying the Vedas.”

Related verses
Yudhiṣṭhira waited for the right season (spring) and then, with Kṛṣṇa's permission, selected qualified Vedic priests. Big undertakings require both right timing and competent help; eagerness alone is not enough.
Reflection Questions
  • What endeavor of mine has been mistimed?
  • Whose competence do I need to invite in for the next stage?

A skilled host does not begin a feast at the cook's convenience; he waits for the hour the guests will arrive. Yudhiṣṭhira holds his Rājasūya in abeyance until the muhūrta ripens and Kṛṣṇa's anumodana — the Lord's nod — is in hand. Sacrifice begins only when both heaven's clock and Bhagavān's consent agree.
