  • pāṇḍu - sutāḥ — the sons of Pāṇḍu
Compound: Pāṇḍu + suta (son). The five brothers rise together. Gauḍīyas: their first impulse is bhakta-anger, the rasa-form of intolerance for Kṛṣṇa-nindā. Verse 43 will check that anger — the Lord wants His own hand on this work.
  • kruddhāḥ — angered
From √krudh. Anger in the bhakta-context is not the kāma-mūla anger of Gītā 2.62 — it is the protective wrath for the beloved. Rūpa Gosvāmī classes this as a sub-shade of rasa, not a doṣa.
  • ut - āyudhāḥ — with raised weapons
Compound: ud (up) + āyudha (weapon). 'Weapons-up'. The Bhāgavatam describes the gesture exactly: arms raised, not yet struck — the moment before Kṛṣṇa intervenes.
  • śisupāla - jighāṁsavaḥ — desiring to kill Śiśupāla
Compound: Śiśupāla + jighāṁsu (desiderative of √han — 'wishing-to-kill'). The grammar names the inner state. Their wish is hot; Kṛṣṇa's cakra is the cool instrument.
Then the sons of Pāṇḍu became furious, and together with the warriors of the Matsya, Kaikaya and Sṛñjaya clans, they rose up from their seats with weapons poised, ready to kill Śiśupāla.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Then the sons of Pāṇḍu became furious, and together with the warriors of the Matsya, Kaikaya and Sṛñjaya clans, they rose up from their seats with weapons poised, ready to kill Śiśupāla.
Commentary

The sons of Pandu, Bhima and others, becoming angry, suddenly sprang to their feet.

Commentary

Unable to act, some left according to the rule: karṇau pidhāya nirayād yad akalpa īśe dharmāvitary asṛṇibhir nṛbhir asyamāne chindyāt prasahya ruśatīm asatīṁ prabhuś cej jihvām asūn api tato visṛjet sa dharmaḥ If one hears an irresponsible person blaspheme the master and controller of religion, one should block his ears and go away if unable to punish him. But if one is able to kill, then one should by force cut out the blasphemer’s tongue and kill the offender, and after that one should give up his own life. SB 4.4.17 Now the action of those who could act is described. They jumped up. The Yādavas, following the Lord, did not rise nor did they say anything.

Commentary

Unable to act, some persons left according to the following rule: karṇau pidhāya nirayād yad akalpa īśe dharmāvitary asṛṇibhir nṛbhir asyamāne chindyāt prasahya ruśatīm asatīṁ prabhuś cej jihvām asūn api tato visṛjet sa dharmaḥ If one hears an irresponsible person blaspheme the master and controller of religion, one should block his ears and go away if unable to punish him. But if one is able to kill, then one should by force cut out the blasphemer’s tongue and kill the offender, and after that one should give up his own life. SB 4.4.17 Now the action of those who could act is described. The Matsyas and others were friends of the Pāṇḍavas jumped up, quickly leaving their seats. The Yādavas, though fully capable, following the Lord, did not rise, nor did they say anything.

Related verses
The Pāṇḍavas and warriors of Matsya, Kaikaya, and Sṛñjaya rose with weapons to kill Śiśupāla. Defense of devotees and the Lord is not passive; sometimes righteousness arms itself.
Reflection Questions
  • When is it right to defend the honor of the Lord or His devotee with action?
  • Where do I conflate restraint with cowardice?

The kindred draw their swords for the family's master — the Pāṇḍavas, Matsyas, Kaikayas, and Sṛñjayas rise as one because Kṛṣṇa, who will not protect Himself, has just been insulted. The bhakta's hand reaches for the weapon faster than the Bhakta's own.
