  • yaunena — by marital relation
From yoni — 'origin, womb.' The Kuru-Yādava bond runs through marriages: Subhadrā to Arjuna, Lakṣmaṇā now to Sāmba. The Kurus reduce kinship to political accommodation.
  • tulyatām nītāḥ — brought to equality (by us)
The breathtaking claim. The Vṛṣṇis — Kṛṣṇa's own clan — are imagined to have been raised to equality by the Kurus' generosity. Pride's distortion is complete.
  • nṛpa - āsanāḥ — whose royal thrones (we gave)
The Kurus believe they conferred kingship on the Yadus. In truth Ugrasena's throne was restored by Kṛṣṇa Himself, and Dvārakā built by Viśvakarman at Kṛṣṇa's direction (SB 10.50).
It is because these Vṛṣṇis are bound to us by marital ties that we have granted them equality, allowing them to share our beds, seats and meals. Indeed, it is we who have given them their royal thrones.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
It is because these Vṛṣṇis are bound to us by marital ties that we have granted them equality, allowing them to share our beds, seats and meals. Indeed, it is we who have given them their royal thrones.
Commentary

They are related to us only by marriage- of Kunti to Pandu. They are only brothers in law.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The Vṛṣṇis are bound to us by marriage. This is directed at Balarāma. His mother Rohiṇī was married to Vasudeva, a Vṛṣṇi. Therefore they sit, sleep and eat together with us.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

These miserable Vṛṣṇis (ete) or these who are related to Balarāma standing here have a relationship by marriage, thus sharing beds, seats and meals. Moreover they have thrones given by us. They do not have these things, being without a kingdom. Thus they have become equal to us.

Concepts
AsanaJiva
The Kurus framed the Vṛṣṇis' equality as their own gift — beds, seats, meals, thrones, all 'granted' from above. Whenever we mistake shared humanity for our generosity, we have already corrupted the relationship.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I take credit for what was never mine to give?
  • What relationships need a humbler accounting of who actually owes whom?

A host who has shared his table with the king's own family begins to claim he gave the king his crown — pride confuses kinship with patronage.
