  • atha — then
Inceptive particle. The Bhāgavata uses atha at decisive turns. The skirmish is over; the duel of the principal warriors begins. The whole chapter's narrative weight tilts on this small word.
  • śauriḥ — Lord Kṛṣṇa
Patronymic from Śūrasena (Vasudeva's father's father). Gauḍīyas note Śuka's choice: not Hari or Govinda but Śauri — Kṛṣṇa as descendant of the great Yadu warrior lineage. The name evokes the kṣatriya backbone of the present action.
  • astrāṇi — weapons
Plural of astra (missile). In dhanurveda an astra is a weapon empowered by mantra — not merely material. Kṛṣṇa says He is releasing astras at the man who asked for them. The poetic logic: Pauṇḍraka named these weapons in verse 8 as his own; Kṛṣṇa now demonstrates whose they are.
  • utsṛjāmi — I am releasing
Present of ut-√sṛj (to release upward). Echoes the future utsrakṣye of verse 8: what Kṛṣṇa promised, He now does in real time. Bhagavān's word and act are unseparated — the simplest definition of His truthfulness.
  • dūta-vākyena — through the words of the messenger
Compound instrumental: dūta (messenger) + vākya (statement). Kṛṣṇa names the exact channel of Pauṇḍraka's earlier speech. Gauḍīyas note: even in mocking, the Lord respects the genealogy of the words — He returns them via the same conduit that delivered them.
Lord Kṛṣṇa then addressed Pauṇḍraka: My dear Pauṇḍraka, the very weapons you spoke of through your messenger, I now release unto you.

Śrīla Prabhupāda writes as follows in Kṛṣṇa: “At this time Lord Kṛṣṇa told Pauṇḍraka, ‘Pauṇḍraka, you requested Me to give up the symbols of Lord Viṣṇu, specifically My disc. Now I will give it up to you. Be careful! You falsely declare yourself to be Vāsudeva, imitating Me. Therefore no one is a greater fool than you.’ From this statement of Kṛṣṇa’s it is clear that any rascal who advertises himself as God is the greatest fool in human society.”

Translation
Lord Kṛṣṇa then addressed Pauṇḍraka: My dear Pauṇḍraka, the very weapons you spoke of through your messenger, I now release unto you.

Commentary

After the armies were destroyed, when all obstacles were completely removed, Kṛṣṇa who had appeared in a warrior dynasty (śauriḥ), Svayam Bhagavān, laughed (bho bho). I now release on you those weapons which were mentioned by your messenger.

Kṛṣṇa keeps His word — 'the weapons you spoke of, I now release.' The Lord is straightforward; what He says He will do, He does. There is no theater in His action, only fidelity to truth.
Reflection Questions
  • Do my words and actions match each other, or do I rely on the gap between them?
  • How might integrity in small commitments shape my larger life?

A teacher hands back the student's own essay, marked through and corrected, with the line: 'Here is what you asked Me to consider — now consider it Mine.' Kṛṣṇa returns Pauṇḍraka's words and weapons to him with interest.
