  • aniruddham — Aniruddha
The grandson of Kṛṣṇa, fourth member of the catur-vyūha (Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, Aniruddha) in Pāñcarātra theology. Gauḍīyas read the Aniruddha-Ūṣā episode as Bhagavān recovering His own kin from the realm of an asura-bhakta of Śiva.
  • bandhūnām — of the relatives
Genitive plural of bandhu (kinsman). The Yadu clan are not just neighbors but Kṛṣṇa's own sambandhi — the verse turns on the special anguish of those who share blood with the missing devotee.
  • vārṣikaḥ — of the rainy season
Adjective from varṣa (rain). Cāturmāsya: four months when motion is suspended, traditionally devoted to extra vrata and bhajana. Viśvanātha and Jīva Gosvāmī note this places the rescue in Mārgaśīrṣa — Kṛṣṇa's own month (Gītā 10.35).
  • anuśocatām — who were lamenting
Present participle of anu-√śuc — sustained, sequential grieving. The same root that names the first word of the Bhagavad-gītā's first verse; Gauḍīyas hear the echo of viraha-bhāva that opens every Vaiṣṇava recovery.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O descendant of Bharata, the relatives of Aniruddha, not seeing Him return, continued to lament as the four rainy months passed.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O descendant of Bharata, the relatives of Aniruddha, not seeing Him return, continued to lament as the four rainy months passed.
Commentary

In the sixty third chapter, Krsna defeats Jvara and Rudra, is praised by them, then cuts off the arms of Banasura, and returns to Dvaraka with Aniruddha. Starting from the month of Jyestha, Aniruddha disappeared for six months. Even the four months of the monsoon season passed and he had not returned.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The word ca means “but.” This indicates a change of subject. All the Yadus (bandhūnām) and their male and female servants (indicated by second ca) continually lamented (anu—śocatām). Four months of the monsoon completely passed (vi—atīyuh). This means it was now Mārgaśīrṣa (December). After Ūsā’s dream which occurred on the Dvādaśī during waxing phase of Vaiśākha month, Aniruddha was brought to her on the first days of Jyeṣṭha month, according to Citralekhā’s words in Hari-vaṁśa. Sapta-rātreṇa te bhīru darśayiṣyāmy ahaṁ priyam: I will show you your beloved in seven nights time. Six months passed, including even the four months of the monsoon. The first ca can also mean “and the four months of the monsoon passed.” Thus the Yadus began to worry more. O best of the Bharata clan! You were born in the Pāṇḍava family. You know that the pastimes of the Lord do not go in vain.

Sapta-rātreṇa te bhīru darśayiṣyāmy ahaṁ priyam: I will show you your beloved in seven nights time. Six months passed, including even the four months of the monsoon, since it was not possible to fight during the monsoon period. Or by the will of the Lord, delay was created for the battle between Bāṇa and Aniruddha. The first ca can also mean “and though the four months of the monsoon passed.” Or according to Śukadeva the abduction took place at the beginning of the monsoon. Śukadeva addresses Parīkṣit with amazement, since in spite of the presence of the Lord, the Yadus did not know the whereabouts of Aniruddha. Or it is similar to their activities while being seemingly ignorant of Abhimanyu’ fall, during the Kurukṣetra war.

Jiva
Aniruddha's relatives lamented His absence through the four rainy months. Even in a devoted family, separation from a loved one casts a shadow over whole seasons until the truth becomes known.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose absence am I quietly grieving right now, and have I named it to anyone?
  • How can I let unresolved waiting deepen rather than deaden my faith?

Like Yaśodā counting Kṛṣṇa's footsteps when He is late from the pasture, Aniruddha's relatives count the rainy months one by one. Separation from a beloved Vaiṣṇava sets a different clock — each missed day weighs as much as the one before.
