  • mahiṣyaḥ — chief queens
From mahiṣī, principal queen of a king (as opposed to other consorts). The eight aṣṭa-mahiṣīs are specifically the named, married queens — Rukmiṇī, Satyabhāmā, Jāmbavatī, Kālindī, Mitravindā, Bhadrā, Lakṣmaṇā, Nagnajitī — distinguished in Gauḍīya devotion from the 16,100.
  • pradyumna-ādīn — headed by Pradyumna
Pradyumna is Kṛṣṇa's vyūha-expansion who took birth as Rukmiṇī's son after being abducted as an infant by Śambara (SB 10.55). In Pāñcarātra he is the third vyūha — placing him at the head of the sons signals he is no ordinary prince.
  • gṛṇāmi — I shall recite
From √gṛ, 'to praise, to chant.' The same verb gives gīrvāṇa (one whose speech is praise). Śuka frames the list not as dynasty-cataloguing but as a kind of nāma-saṅkīrtana of Kṛṣṇa's family — fitting for a Bhāgavata-pāṭha.
  • kṛṣṇa-strīṇām — of the wives of Lord Kṛṣṇa
kṛṣṇa-strī as a compound elevates the women: they are not generic strīs but Kṛṣṇa's strīs, sharing in His identity. Gauḍīyas note that even being called 'Kṛṣṇa's' is itself a Vaikuṇṭha-credential.
Among Lord Kṛṣṇa’s wives, each of whom had ten sons, I previously mentioned eight principal queens. I shall now recite for you the names of those eight queens’ sons, headed by Pradyumna.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Among Lord Kṛṣṇa's wives, each of whom had ten sons, I previously mentioned eight principal queens. I shall now recite for you the names of those eight queens' sons, headed by Pradyumna.
Commentary

Having described a related topic, now the main topic is introduced. Each queen had ten sons. First the sons of the principal eight queens are named.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

I will describe on the ten sons of the eight queens, since describing others will increase the volume of the text too much.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

He will mention the names of the ten sons of the eight queens, and not the others. The mood of the story would be interrupted since there were so many sons to mention. Pradyumna was the first son.

Concepts
Jiva
Śukadeva announces the names of the principal queens' sons, beginning with Pradyumna. The careful preservation of these names reminds us that every soul in the Lord's family has individual significance.
Reflection Questions
  • Do I treat the Lord's devotees as a faceless crowd or as individuals worth knowing by name?
  • How might naming and remembering Kṛṣṇa's associates deepen my own connection to Him?

Like a gardener naming each tree only after he has planted all eight rows, Śuka first establishes the principle — ten sons per queen — and only now names the rows, beginning with Pradyumna at the head.
