  • vyajanam — a fan
The cāmara — a standard implement of Vaiṣṇava deity worship. Gauḍīya temple paddhati still uses it before the Lord at midday and evening. Rukmiṇī's gesture is the eternal temple gesture made personal.
  • ratna-daṇḍam — jeweled handle
Compound: ratna (jewel) + daṇḍa (handle, staff). Aiśvarya in the very implement of sevā — even the tool is gem-studded — yet she does not stand on the wealth; she takes it up to serve.
  • upāsām cakre — she worshiped / served
Perfect periphrastic of upa + √ās — to sit near, attend, worship. The verb tilts the act toward upāsanā (worship), not mere fanning. The Bhāgavatam author chooses the cultic word: this is pūjā, performed by the Goddess of Fortune over her Lord.
  • īśvaram — her master
Accusative of īśvara — controller, husband, Lord. He is named with the highest of titles even as His queen worships Him with the fan. The verse refuses to choose between aiśvarya and mādhurya: she serves Īśvara, and serves Him in His bedchamber.
From her maidservant’s hand Goddess Rukmiṇī took a yak-hair fan with a jeweled handle, and then she began to worship her master by fanning Him.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
From her maidservant's hand Goddess Rukmiṇī took a yak-hair fan with a jeweled handle, and then she began to worship her master by fanning Him.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

This verse describes how she served him with the cāmara. The word devī indicates a great queen. Śukadeva describes her gestures.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

This verse describes how she served him with the cāmara or a small fan made of feathers. This was very soft. The word devī indicates her great beauty by serving in this manner. Or it means she was a queen.

Rukmiṇī takes a yak-hair fan with jeweled handle from her maidservant and begins to worship her master by fanning Him. Service is taken from another's hand and performed personally; the chain is honored.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you receive a tool from a server and then perform with it yourself?
  • How does that gesture honor everyone involved?

Like a pūjārī taking the cāmara from an assistant and waving it personally over the deity, Rukmiṇī receives the fan from her maidservant's hand and becomes the worshiper. The instrument is the same; what changes is who holds it — and whose love moves it.
