Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.60.49
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
pralambhitā
—
fooled
Past passive of pra + √labh — to deceive in jest. The technical rasa-term for the form of līlā the chapter has performed. Gauḍīyas treat pralambha as one of the Lord's permanent capacities — it serves to surface and intensify the devotee's bhāva.
-
sādhvi
—
O saintly lady
Feminine vocative of sādhu. He addresses her now as 'saintly one' — the title that retroactively sanctifies everything she has just said. The vocatives have moved from rāja-putri (v. 10), vaidarbhi (v. 11), bhīru-bhāmini (v. 31) to sādhvi here. The chapter's rasa-arc is its address-arc.
-
satyam eva hi
—
indeed correct
Adverbial intensifier: satya (truth) + eva (indeed) + hi (certainly). Triple affirmation. He certifies the entire reply (vv. 34–48) as true. Gauḍīyas read this as the Bhāgavatam's most authoritative seal on Rukmiṇī's theology — Bhagavān has signed off.
-
anvāttha
—
you replied to
Perfect of anu + ā + √vac — to speak in answer. The verb of formal reply. The chapter's structure is dialogue: His speech, her speech, His certifying speech. Each act of vāk is timed precisely.
"We joked with you, wanting to hear your words." This is in the plural (strotu kamaih) to indicate that not only Krsna, but some of her attendants wanted to hear. The plural can also indicate that all the functions of the sense of hearing had a desire to hear. "Having been the object of my joke, you interpreted whatever I said in another way (anu attha), which was true."
Kṛṣṇa praises her for her qualities. O chaste woman! He praises her for her wealth and birth. O princess! Also I have said this on considering that you should give good answers. That was to be expected since you are a princess. I joked with you because I wanted to hear your answers. He speaks in the plural because friends were with him, who had come on thinking he needed assistance. You have explained my words in a most favorable way (anvāttha). What you said is certainly true. There is no doubt.
O excellent woman (sādhvi)! The answers you give should be excellent. That is suitable since you are a princess. Therefore, I (asmābhiḥ) desired to hear these worlds. He speaks in the plural to indicate respect for himself as he respectfully desires to hear. Hi indicates certainty. There is no doubt that what you have said is true.
- Where could Kṛṣṇa be teasing you precisely to draw out the beauty of your reply?
- How does this image change difficult moments?
The Lord, at last, drops the mask and says it plainly: 'I deceived you only because I wanted to hear you speak like this.' The whole pralambha is named — pralambhitā, deceived — and at the same instant nullified: 'everything you said is true.' The teasing has yielded its rasa-fruit; He certifies the reply.
