Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.6.42
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
śrutvā
—
after hearing
Gerund of śru (to hear). The standard verb of bhakti-yoga's first limb. The Bhāgavata's whole pedagogy is structured around śravaṇa — and the verse models the right response to it: vismaya and blessings.
-
svasti
—
all auspiciousness / blessing
Indeclinable — 'may there be well-being.' Vedic benediction. Vrajavāsīs offer it to baby Kṛṣṇa. Bhāgavata-tone: the Lord is the source of all svasti and is also blessed by His devotees — acintya-bhedābheda in social form.
-
pūtanā - āgamana - ādikam
—
(the whole account of) Pūtanā's coming etc.
Compound — Pūtanā + āgamana (arrival) + ādi (and the rest). Bhāgavata's narrative-suffix: ādi covers the whole following sequence. The villagers receive the story whole, not in pieces.
-
tat - nidhanam
—
(the news of) her death
Compound — tat (her) + nidhana (death). The narrative arc: arrival → death. Bhāgavata's līlā-grammar is concise: an asura comes, an asura dies; what changes is what the Vrajavāsīs feel between those two events.
-
su - vismitāḥ
—
being struck with great wonder
Compound — su (very) + vismita (amazed) + plural. The proper devotional response to hari-kathā. Caitanya tradition treats adbhuta as a vyabhicāri-bhāva nourishing every other rasa — vismaya is bhakti's reflex, repeated four times in this chapter (vv. 14, 18, 31, 42).
The returning cowherd men were very astonished. "Vasudeva has spoken correctly." In discussing amongst themselves they said, "Who else but Narayana could protect the baby?"
When Nanda and others returning heard in Vraja the details told by the protectors of Gokula about Pūtanā’s coming, her death, as well as giving her breast and her cries of pain, and as well the blessings given to the child, they were amazed. This increased their parental affection.
- Recall one 'near-miss' from your past today and explicitly thank Kṛṣṇa for the protection you did not see at the time.
- When someone shares good news of a danger averted, respond like the Vrajavāsīs — offer blessings and glorify Kṛṣṇa instead of crediting luck.
- Speak to an elder devotee this week the way Nanda thanked Vasudeva — acknowledge concretely how their foresight has shielded your bhakti.
The Vrajavāsīs hearing the full story and blessing the baby Kṛṣṇa, while Nanda silently thanks Vasudeva, is the village squaring its accounts at evening — one set of blessings up to the Lord who saved them, one quiet hand-clasp across to the friend who warned them. Real bhakti-saṁskṛti always books both entries.
After hearing the Bhāgavatam from Sūta Gosvāmī at Naimiṣāraṇya (SB 1.1, 12.13), the assembled ṛṣis blessed the speaker, glorified Kṛṣṇa, and recognized Vyāsa's labor with quiet gratitude. The pattern is the same as in 10.6.42 — bless the child (the līlā), thank the messenger (the foretelling).
Gauḍīya saṁskṛti models itself on Naimiṣāraṇya's manners: receive Hari-kathā, glorify the Lord, then thank the human chain that brought it to you.
