Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.59.25
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
bhūmiḥ uvāca
—
the earth-goddess said
Bhū-devī's prayer begins here. Gauḍīyas treat earth-goddess stavas with special tenderness — Bhūmi is herself a consort of Viṣṇu (as Bhū-śakti); her prayer is from inside His circle, not outside.
-
deva - deva
—
Lord of lords
Reduplicated devatā address — devānāṁ devaḥ, the deva above devas. The standard top-of-hierarchy invocation; placed first in the prayer.
-
bhakta - icchā - upātta - rūpāya
—
to You who assume forms according to Your devotees' desire
Compound chain: bhakta (devotee) + icchā (desire) + upātta (taken up) + rūpa (form). Foundational Vaiṣṇava theology — Bhagavān's various avatāras and rūpas are not necessitated by His nature but elected for His devotees. Gauḍīya commentaries make this the verse's hinge.
-
parama - ātman
—
O Supreme Soul
Compound: parama (highest) + ātman (self). The localized Lord in the heart — Paramātmā is the Gauḍīya category that names the Lord's pervasive in-dwelling, distinct from the jīva-ātmā and from Bhagavān's full svayaṁ-rūpa.
"You know my sincere heart, since you are paramatma, even though I am the mother of someone opposed to you."
You are the protector of devatās like Brahmā (deva-deveśa). Therefore you hold the conch to kill the wicked. You appear in various forms like Matsya by the desire of your devotees. You give them the proper intelligence (paramātman).
You are the protector of devatās like Brahmā (deva-deveśa). Therefore you hold the conch, disc and club to kill the wicked. You appear in various forms like Matsya by the desire of your devotees. You give them the proper intelligence (paramātman). The order of holding the weapons is from lower left hand, and ending with the right lower. Since his consort is situated on his left, she is mentioned first from the left. At this time he was seen for four arms, as Nārada sees him. “Or deva-deveśa means Nārāyaṇa.” That is true. He is you. Thus the four armed form is described holding the conch etc. “Why, if I am Nārāyaṇa, am I also two armed?” You assume forms according to the desire of your devotee. Appearing as a human you are beautiful. By your power you spread everywhere or you are the dearest to all people. Paramātman!
- What form has Kṛṣṇa taken in your life specifically to fulfill a desire?
- Where have you missed the form because it didn't match your expectation?
A mother begins her prayer not with her plea but with offering — śaṅkha, cakra, gadā — Bhūmi names each of His emblems. She speaks to Him as Paramātmā first, the One who takes forms according to devotees' desire; only later (verse 31) will she ask for her grandson. Bhakti orders its own grammar: praise first, plea last.
