  • hṛṣṭaḥ — pleased
Past participle of √hṛṣ — gladdened. Bhagavān is satisfied with the king's address. Gauḍīya: the bhakta's correct opening sentence already pleases the Lord; the result of the meeting is secured in the first speech.
  • megha - gambhīrayā — deep as a cloud
Compound megha (cloud) + gambhīra (deep). Kṛṣṇa's voice resembles thunder — a recurrent Bhāgavatam image. Gauḍīya: Bhagavān's voice is the syllabic form of the sky, formidable and life-giving at once.
  • vācā — in a voice
Instrumental of vāc — speech. Bhagavān's vāc is the seed of the Veda. Whatever He says now will be śruti for the king. Gauḍīya: every word from Kṛṣṇa's mouth is svayaṁ-pramāṇa, self-evidencing.
  • kuru - nandana — O beloved descendant of Kuru
Vocative — Śuka addresses Parīkṣit. The narrator does not let the listener forget he is being addressed; the kuru-nandana is being told the kuru-history as his own family story. Gauḍīya: the Bhāgavatam's pravacana is always relational.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O beloved descendant of Kuru, the Supreme Lord was pleased, and after accepting a comfortable seat He smiled and addressed the King in a voice as deep as the rumbling of a cloud.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O beloved descendant of Kuru, the Supreme Lord was pleased, and after accepting a comfortable seat He smiled and addressed the King in a voice as deep as the rumbling of a cloud.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The first line of the verse indicates the good fortune of the king, whom the Lord accepted as his devotee. The second line shows how his heart was stolen by the Lord’s sweetness and mercy. The Lord accepted a seat which was offered for a long time. He was joyful because of the great bhakti of his devotee who desired him. This is shown by his acceptance of the seat, since he sat down in it comfortably. Kṛṣṇa smiled because of his nature, but also because of attaining his desire, with a little embarrassment. Out of excitement Śukadeva calls to Parīkṣit, “O son of the Kurus!”

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The Lord was endowed with unlimited qualities like affection for his devotee (bhagavān). He accepted a seat which was offered for a long time. He stood for some time because he was being praised, and then sat. He smiled out of his nature or to give mercy to the king. Or knowing the king’s arrangements and desires, he felt inner joy at the request of the daughter. Out of excitement Śukadeva calls to Parīkṣit, “O son of the Kurus!”

Asana
Pleased, the Lord smiles and addresses the King in a voice deep as cloud-rumble. Pleasure of the Lord precedes His response; smile is part of speech.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you imagine Kṛṣṇa speaking without pleasure?
  • How could His smile color what you hear from Him?

When a great king finally speaks in council, his voice arrives like rain after long heat — deep, rolling, expected. Kṛṣṇa's reply to Nagnajit is the megha-gambhīra-vāc the Bhāgavatam keeps reserved for Him.
