  • śreyaḥ — pious work
The auspicious, the ultimately beneficial. Yudhiṣṭhira asks what śreyas could have caused Kṛṣṇa's appearance — and immediately concedes he does not know. Gauḍīya: Bhagavān's appearance is itself the śreyas; no prior śreyas needs to be invoked.
  • yoga — of yogic practice
In the compound yogeśvarāṇām — masters of yoga. Even those who control prāṇa and senses cannot easily see Him; bhakti's logic outruns yoga's. The Pāṇḍava is no yogeśvara, yet he sees Kṛṣṇa face to face.
  • durdarśaḥ — rarely seen
From dur (difficult) + dṛś (to see). Gauḍīyas pair this with BG 11.54 — bhaktyā tv ananyayā śakyaḥ. Difficult by yoga; reachable by bhakti.
  • ku - medhasam — us fools
Compound ku (bad) + medhas (intellect). The dharma-rāja calls himself ku-medhā — a Gauḍīya signature: humility (kārpaṇya) is one of the six limbs of śaraṇāgati. The recognition of one's own foolishness is, paradoxically, the highest wisdom in bhakti.
King Yudhiṣṭhira said: O supreme controller, I do not know what pious deeds we fools have done so that we can see You, whom the masters of yogic perfection rarely see.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
King Yudhiṣṭhira said: O supreme controller, I do not know what pious deeds we fools have done so that we can see You, whom the masters of yogic perfection rarely see.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Hearing of the Lord’s affection for his devotee, Yudhiṣṭhira describes the Lord’s affection for the most fallen, taking shelter of humility while thinking of himself unqualified as a devotee because of his modest nature. What auspicious act did we perform in our previous lives so that we, who are devoid of bhakti (ku-medhasām), see you now? You are only seen after a long time by even the masters of bhakti-yoga. It is only because you are affectionate to the most fallen that we see you. O independent lord (adhīśvara)! Or, O protector of us unintelligent miserable souls (adhi īśvara)!

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Hearing of the Lord’s affection for his devotee, Yudhiṣṭhira describes the Lord’s affection for the most fallen, taking shelter of humility, while thinking of himself unqualified as a devotee because of his modest nature. I, the son of Dharma, the eldest brother, do not know what pious acts we have done. Or let others know. I do not know. He mocks those who think they are knowledgeable. Why? O supremely independent (adhīśvara)! You are not seen even in the hearts of experts at samādhi (yogeśvarānām). Or O lord of suffering persons like us (adhīśvara)! O protector! Or O Lord who reveals his additional powers (adhīśvara)! You are seen by the best of devotees only when they suffer (dur). You become visible only after a long time and great suffering. I do not know the pious acts by which you are seen by us, devoid of bhakti (kumedhasām). We do not have the piety of great bhakti. We can see you only because you are affectionate to the lowest.

Yudhiṣṭhira: I don't know what pious deeds we fools have done to see You — whom even yogic masters rarely see. Humility before unearned grace; the king names himself a fool.
Reflection Questions
  • Where could you acknowledge yourself as 'fool' before unearned grace?
  • How does that humility actually increase the grace?

A pauper who suddenly finds the emperor sitting in his courtyard cannot account for his good fortune — he searches his memory for any deed that could have earned it and finds none. Yudhiṣṭhira's wonder is the bhakta's standard posture: the Lord is here, and the accounting will not balance.

Dhruva's astonishment

When the four-armed Viṣṇu appeared before five-year-old Dhruva (SB 4.9), the boy could not believe the vision; he had asked for a kingdom and received the Person who gives kingdoms.

Yudhiṣṭhira's 'what pious deed did we do' is the same posture in adult form: bhakti's logic is grace-first, never desert-first. Gauḍīyas note: the bhakta who acknowledges his own ku-medhā (dull intelligence) has already received the highest mercy.
