  • mada - cyudbhiḥ — exuding mada (rut-fluid)
Compound: mada (rut, intoxication) + cyut (oozing). The elephants are physiologically intoxicated; Gauḍīyas read mada also as the kāma-mada of the assembled kings. The whole procession is one large image of pride about to fall.
  • gaja - anīkaiḥ — with hordes of elephants
Compound: gaja (elephant) + anīka (army). The same word for the four-fold army (caturaṅgiṇī) that Arjuna sees at Kurukṣetra. Material force is being staged precisely so that Kṛṣṇa's spiritual ease can mock it (verse 56).
  • patti - aśva - saṅkulaiḥ — crowded with foot soldiers and horses
Compound: patti (foot soldier) + aśva (horse) + saṅkula (thronged). Vyāsa is building maximum density — the more soldiers, the more dramatic when Kṛṣṇa simply walks Rukmiṇī through them in verses 51–56.
King Damaghoṣa traveled to Kuṇḍina accompanied by armies of elephants exuding mada, chariots hung with golden chains, and numerous cavalry and infantry soldiers.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
King Damaghoṣa traveled to Kuṇḍina accompanied by armies of elephants exuding mada, chariots hung with golden chains, and numerous cavalry and infantry soldiers.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Though the father was a different person from the son, the description of his preparations for the wedding is given to show that even his actions (not only his son’s) were useless. The subject (king of Cedi) of the sentence is from the previous verse.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The father is further described. He travelled with many elephants.

Damaghoṣa travels to Kuṇḍina with mada-exuding elephants, gold-chained chariots, cavalry, infantry — a military procession. The opposition arrives with force; weddings can be cover for political alignments.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you ignore the military undertone of a seemingly social event?
  • How does scripture help you read 'wedding processions' that are actually power plays?

An army of perfumes and gold rides toward a wedding it will never witness. Damaghoṣa's procession to Kuṇḍina is the same pattern as Rāvaṇa's grand entry to abduct Sītā — material magnificence marching toward defeat by Bhagavān.

Rāvaṇa's golden chariot

The Lord of Laṅkā rode out against Rāma with golden chariots, war-elephants and a hundred thousand soldiers, certain his force could not be overcome. Vālmīki dwells on each ornament — the more elaborate the array, the sharper the coming fall.

Gauḍīyas read SB 10.53.15 in this register: Damaghoṣa's mada-cyut elephants are Rāvaṇa's army in miniature, marshalled against a Lord who needs no army to lift His devotee from their midst.
