  • ārya — respected one (elder brother)
Vocative. Kṛṣṇa addresses Balarāma with the term for an elder — even Bhagavān maintains the relationship of younger brother. This vinaya (humility) before the elder is itself a teaching about how the devotee approaches guru.
  • nau — Our (dual)
Dual genitive of asmad — 'of the two of us.' Used precisely to mark the joint mission of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. In Caitanya-līlā this dual reappears as Caitanya–Nityānanda, the same two appearing as guru-pair.
  • sādhūnām — of the saintly devotees
Genitive plural of sādhu. The sādhu is defined in SB 3.25.21 as titikṣavaḥ kāruṇikāḥ — tolerant, compassionate, friend to all. Protection of such persons is Kṛṣṇa's standing pratijñā (Gītā 9.31).
  • bhāram — burden
Trayaḥ-viṁśati-anīka-bhāram — the burden of twenty-three armies. Same bhāra-doctrine: Kṛṣṇa is consistently framed as bhū-bhāra-hartā, the lifter of earth's burden, of which Jarāsandha's army is one installment.
  • apākuru — please remove
Imperative of apa + √kṛ. Kṛṣṇa requests Balarāma — the senior is being asked to perform the cleansing. This is the etiquette of joint līlā: the younger initiates the action, the elder fulfills it.
[The Supreme Lord said:] My respected elder brother, see this danger which has beset Your dependents, the Yadus! And see, dear master, how Your personal chariot and favorite weapons have come before You. The purpose for which We have taken birth, My Lord, is to secure the welfare of Our devotees. Please now remove from the earth the burden of these twenty-three armies.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
[The Supreme Lord said:] My respected elder brother, see this danger which has beset Your dependents, the Yadus! And see, dear master, how Your personal chariot and favorite weapons have come before You. The purpose for which We have taken birth, My Lord, is to secure the welfare of Our devotees. Please now remove from the earth the burden of these twenty-three armies.
Commentary

You are the lord of the Yadus who are defended (avantah) by you (tva). ":See the danger to the Yadus (yadunam) who are protected by you (tva avatam)."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Pay attention! Why? There is danger to the Yadus protected by you. He addresses Balarāma with respect since that is his nature. O master (prabho)! You can understand that they need protection. Though you can do everything without weapons, you should accept the weapons since they are dear to you (dayitāni). Destroy the armies. Deliver completely (sam—uddhara) your devotees (svān) from danger since (hi) we should also help other devotees also. O Lord (īśa)! He encourages Balarāma with this utterance. The battle arrangements of the enemy are described in order to deal with them. There was a total of twenty-three akṣauhiṇīs.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Destroy the soldiers (etat). The main goal is to deliver (uddhara) without harm (sam) the Yadus from danger. This must be done because that is the purpose (etad artham hi) of our appearance in this world. We are not only here to play. Kṛṣṇa addresses Balarāma with respect in order to obtain his assistance (ārya). You are capable of fighting (prabho)! This is used to make him enthusiastic to fight. The weapons are dear to you (dayita). Therefore make their coming fruitful by fighting. Or by these weapons you will easily kill the enemy. The word etat emphasizes the necessity to act. The purpose is to make the devotees happy (śarma-kṛt). O capable Lord (īśa)! He encourages him to fight. There was a total of twenty-three akṣauhiṇīs.

Related verses
Respected elder brother, see the danger to Your dependents the Yadus, and see Your chariot and weapons before You. The purpose for which We have taken birth is to protect dharma. Mission is announced explicitly between cooperating Lords.
Reflection Questions
  • Where could you state the joint mission to a key cooperator clearly?
  • How does naming the danger and the equipment in the same sentence sharpen resolve?

Kṛṣṇa points to His own chariot like a child pointing to a gift — 'look, ārya, Your chariot has come.' The whole purpose of His birth and Balarāma's, He says here outright, is the welfare of the sādhus: 'sādhūnāṁ śarma-kṛt.'

Paritrāṇāya sādhūnām

Gītā 4.8 declares paritrāṇāya sādhūnām — for the deliverance of the saintly. SB 10.50.13–14 calls this the very purpose of nau janma — 'Our birth,' addressed to Balarāma. Gauḍīya commentators (Viśvanātha, Sanātana) note the dual nau — Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma have one mission, one birth-purpose, two bodies.

The sādhu protected here is collective — the Yadu kula — but the principle is universal: wherever a single devotee is endangered, the Lord, with His brother, arranges chariot and weapons in advance.
