  • mādhavam — Lord Kṛṣṇa, husband of Lakṣmī, sweetness-Lord
From mā (Lakṣmī) + dhava (husband), or madhu (sweetness) + suffix. The name chosen at this moment is significant — Trivakrā approaches not 'Kṛṣṇa' generically but Mādhava, the rasa-mūrti of mādhurya. Gauḍīyas read the Bhāgavatam's name-choices as deliberate.
  • sa-vrīḍa-līlā-utsmita — with shy, playful smiles
Compound: sa (with) + vrīḍa (shyness) + līlā (play) + utsmita (smiling broadly). Vrīḍa is the recognized ornament of the nāyikā in Sanskrit poetics. Even kāmic vrīḍa, turned toward Bhagavān, becomes the seed of bhāva.
  • vibhrama-īkṣitaiḥ — with coquettish glances
Compound: vibhrama (allurement, the playful agitation of love) + īkṣita (glance). The poetic vocabulary of śṛṅgāra-rasa is being deployed by Trivakrā at the wrong target — yet Kṛṣṇa, who is Himself rasarāja, accepts even mis-aimed rasa and grants its outward fulfillment while reserving the inward.
  • prasādhita-ātmā — with her body prepared
Compound: prasādhita (decorated, arranged) + ātmā (here, body/self). Self-decoration directed at the Lord is what arcana does too — Trivakrā is unknowingly performing the outer form of pūjā even while intending śṛṅgāra.
Trivakrā prepared herself by bathing, anointing her body, and dressing in fine garments, by putting on jewelry, garlands and perfume, and also by chewing betel nut, drinking fragrant liquor, and so on. She then approached Lord Mādhava with shy, playful smiles and coquettish glances.

It is clear from this verse that the ways a woman prepares for sexual enjoyment have not changed in thousands of years.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Trivakrā prepared herself by bathing, anointing her body, and dressing in fine garments, by putting on jewelry, garlands and perfume, and also by chewing betel nut, drinking fragrant liquor, and so on. She then approached Lord Mādhava with shy, playful smiles and coquettish glances.
Commentary

She prepared her body (atma) for enjoyment by applying aguru incense and other items.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

She anointed her body with sandalwood paste and perfumes made from sandalwood etc. Sudhā-āsava means honey. Slowly she approached Kṛṣṇa, even though he was the consort of Lakṣmī (mādhavam). How can one describe how he is controlled by his mercy to the fallen?

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The ointment (anulepa) was made of sandalwood and kuṁkuma. Special fragrance (gandha) is made from sandalwood, aguru and other substances. Sudhā means thick milk, slightly warm. Or sudhāsava means honey. Ādibhiḥ indicates tilaka, kajjala and other accessories. The list is in order of increasing excellence or in order of dressing the body. She approached the beloved of Lakṣmī (mādhavam) slowly (upasasāra). This indicates her great fortune. Or mādhavam indicates he who is endowed with various types of beauty, sweetness and cleverness, who appeared in the Madhu dynasty to manifest his unlimited qualities as bhagavān.

Concepts
Atma
Trivakrā prepares by bathing, anointing, dressing, jeweling, garlanding, perfuming, chewing betel, drinking fragrant liquor, and approaches with shy playful smiles. Material preparation for desire is meticulous; if devotional preparation matched it, we would be far ahead.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you prepare more carefully for ordinary enjoyments than for meeting Kṛṣṇa?
  • What single preparatory act could you upgrade in worship?

A bride preparing for her wedding night and a devotee preparing for darśana use the same vocabulary — bath, ornament, perfume, garland — but the target of the offering reveals which it is. Trivakrā does the bridal toilet; what she does not yet know is that Bhagavān is rearranging the offering into worship without her permission.
