  • brahma - īśa - ādyāḥ — Brahmā, Śiva, and the others
Compound: brahmā + īśa (Śiva) + ādi (et cetera). The Bhāgavatam pairs Brahmā and Śiva as Bhagavān's principal vibhūti — they head the celestial procession. Gauḍīyas read this verse for the doctrine that even the highest demigods are vibhūti (expansions), not independent.
  • vibhūtayaḥ — expansions, manifestations
Plural of vibhūti. Cf. BG 10 — the vibhūti-yoga chapter. The demigods are named as His vibhūti. The Bhāgavatam never gives them autonomy; their dance here is the dance of the Lord's own powers congratulating Him.
  • puṣpaiḥ kirantaḥ — scattering with flowers
Compound clause: puṣpa (flower) + kirat (scattering). Cf. SB 10.1.20 (the demigods praying for the avatāra) — the same demigods who prayed for His descent now scatter flowers on His ascent through this līlā.
  • nanṛtuḥ striyaḥ — the women danced
The wives of the demigods. Cf. SB 1.9 — apsarasas dance at the Mahābhārata's great events. Female celebration is the Bhāgavatam's signature for cosmic ratification: when the women of heaven dance, the order has been restored.
Kettledrums resounded in the sky as Brahmā, Śiva and other demigods, the Lord’s expansions, rained down flowers upon Him with pleasure. They chanted His praises, and their wives danced.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Kettledrums resounded in the sky as Brahmā, Śiva and other demigods, the Lord's expansions, rained down flowers upon Him with pleasure. They chanted His praises, and their wives danced.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The devatās were the servants of Kṛṣṇa. They had been given powers by him (vibhūtayaḥ).

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

All the devatās became pleased. Drums sounded on their own, since they were heavenly drums, or on the strength of the auspiciousness. Brahmā and Indra and others, who were his servants (vibhūtayaḥ), pleased, showered flowers and sang praises. (Very good! Very good!) The Āpsarās danced.

Jiva
Kettledrums resound; Brahmā, Śiva, and demigods rain flowers and chant His praises while their wives dance. The cosmic audience celebrates what mortals only began to see; victories ripple through dimensions.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose unseen celebration do you forget when your visible community lags?
  • What demigod-level rejoicing might be happening in response to your hidden surrender?

Kettledrums sound in the sky; Brahmā, Śiva and the demigods shower flowers; their wives dance. The cosmic order, suppressed under Kaṁsa, springs back into ceremony the second the body falls. The heavens always have a parade ready; they were just waiting for the cue.
