  • guptam — guarded
Past participle of √gup — to protect. The bow is heavily guarded. Gauḍīya: guarding what Bhagavān has decided to take is the asuric posture — Kaṁsa exemplifies it across the canto.
  • arcitam — being worshiped
Past participle of √arc. The bow is ritually worshiped by Kaṁsa's men. Gauḍīya commentary: this is misdirected pūjā — energy spent on weapons instead of on the Lord. The Bhāgavata silently contrasts this arcana with the merchants' upāyana of verse 13.
  • vāryamāṇaḥ — warded off
Present passive participle of √vṛ — to obstruct. Many tried to stop Him. The Bhāgavata insists on this obstruction so that the breaking is doubly impressive — He acted not in unguarded space but against active resistance.
  • prasahya — by force, overpowering
Absolutive of pra + √sah — to bear, to overcome. Kṛṣṇa does not slip past the guards; He overrides them. Gauḍīya note: the same Lord who is bound by Yaśodā's rope here forces His way through a king's guard — līlā holds both possibilities simultaneously.
  • ādade — He took up, picked up
Perfect of ā + √dā. The act of lifting the bow. Gauḍīya parallel: the same root that gives ādāna for Rāma's lifting of Śiva's bow (Sītā-svayaṁvara) — the Bhāgavata is quietly aligning Kṛṣṇa's act with Rāma's.
That most opulent bow was guarded by a large company of men, who were respectfully worshiping it. Kṛṣṇa pushed His way forward and, despite the guards’ attempts to stop Him, picked it up.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
That most opulent bow was guarded by a large company of men, who were respectfully worshiping it. Kṛṣṇa pushed His way forward and, despite the guards' attempts to stop Him, picked it up.
Commentary

Krsna took the bow with great force (prasahya).

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The bow was guarded by and worshipped by many of Kaṁsa’s servants and thus had a great wealth of ornaments etc. The guards in anger tried to stop him from approaching out of affection for and fear of Kaṁsa.

Despite guards' attempts, Kṛṣṇa pushes through and picks up the opulent, well-guarded bow. The Lord does not request access; He claims what is His.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you politely defer when the Lord would simply pick up what He came for?
  • What in your life are you guarding that He may already be walking toward?

Palace guards form a ring around the royal weapon; a country boy walks through them as though they were tall grass. Kaṁsa's elaborate defenses become, against Kṛṣṇa, a child's stick-fence — not because the guards are weak, but because the world's barriers are not the kind that hold Bhagavān.
