Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.39.25
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
dāśārha - bhoja - andhaka - vṛṣṇi - sātvatām
—
of the Dāśārhas, Bhojas, Andhakas, Vṛṣṇis and Sātvatas
The five lineages of the Yadu clan into which Kṛṣṇa was born. Gopīs name them by tribe to underline that all these powerful kṣatriyas will see Him while the gopīs sit in their courtyards seeing nothing.
-
guṇa - āspadam
—
the reservoir of (all) qualities
Guṇa-āspada = the foundation/seat of all auspicious qualities. The Bhāgavata's standard descriptor for Bhagavān — Parāśara Muni's six aiśvaryas are all 'seated' in Him.
-
śrī - ramaṇam
—
the lover / delighter of Śrī (Lakṣmī)
Even Lakṣmī delights in Him; how much more those who get to see Him in person. Yet Gauḍīyas note: the gopīs' love is held higher than even Śrī's — Śrī begs for what Vraja gives freely.
-
adhvani
—
on the road
Locative — 'on the road.' Even bystanders on the highway will benefit. The gopīs see Kṛṣṇa's mere passage as transforming a road into tīrtha, which it literally does (cf. SB 10.38).
"The people of Mathura will today attain the bliss that the inhabitants of Vraja had. The eyes of the city people of the Dasarha, bhoja and others, who see him on the road will become joyful." Or "The eyes of the city people and the people on the road will become joyful." Drsah is a singular form of "eye" to indicate species.
They will see Kṛṣṇa, the shelter of all types of qualities. By taking shelter of him those qualities reach perfection. Because he has all qualities in perfection, he produces rati in even Lakṣmī (śrī-rāmaṇam), dear to Viṣṇu. This is a bold statement. They had heard that he was in previous birth the son of Vasudeva from Garga. Thus they address him as the son of Devakī. Even Nanda and Yaśodā recognized Kṛṣṇa as Vasudeva’s son. Or Devakī can mean Yaśodā as previously explained. Those living on the road and travelers will also see him. dhanyāste pathi ye kṛṣṇam ito yāntam anivāritāḥ / udvahiṣyanti paśyantaḥ sva-dehaṁ pulakāñcitam // mathurā-nagarī-paura-nayanānāṁ mahotsavaḥ / govindāvayavair dṛṣṭair atīvādya bhaviṣyati // ko nu svapnaḥ sva-bhāgyābhir dṛṣṭas tābhir adhokṣajam / vistāritānta-nayanā yā drakṣyanty anivāritāḥ // Fortunate are the people on the path who see Kṛṣṇa without obstruction and then their hairs stand on end. There will be great joy for the eyes of Mathurā’s citizens when they see his limbs. What dream have I seen? With wide eyes they will see him unobstructed with their fortunate eyes.
The groups mentioned are various members of the Yadu dynasty. Though there were others like the Kukuras, these were the main groups. They will see the person who give pleasure to Lakṣmī (śrī-ramaṇam) or he who gives pleasure the wolrdd by his great beauty. This indicates his great beauty and his attractive dress. He is the abode of all qualities such as his merciful glance and sweet pastimes. He has appeared in the Dāśārha family (devakī-sutam). Or Devakī can mean Yaśodā as previously explained. Those living on the road and travelers will also see him. dhanyāste pathi ye kṛṣṇam ito yāntam anivāritāḥ / udvahiṣyanti paśyantaḥ sva-dehaṁ pulakāñcitam // mathurā-nagarī-paura-nayanānāṁ mahotsavaḥ / govindāvayavair dṛṣṭair atīvādya bhaviṣyati // ko nu svapnaḥ sva-bhāgyābhir dṛṣṭas tābhir adhokṣajam / vistāritānta-nayanā yā drakṣyanty anivāritāḥ // Fortunate are the people on the path who see Kṛṣṇa without obstruction. Their hairs stand on end. There will be great joy for the eyes of Mathurā’s citizens when they see his limbs. What dream have I seen? With wide eyes they will see him unobstructed with their fortunate eyes. Viṣṇu Purāṇa
- Can you be glad for others' darśana even while losing your own?
- Where does devotion graciously refuse to begrudge others their portion of Him?
Like a festival lamp lit at the gate of a foreign city — the Dāśārhas, Bhojas, Andhakas, Vṛṣṇis, Sātvatas, even the roadside crowd, will have a feast for the eyes when Devakī's son passes. Strangers will gain what natives are about to lose. The gopīs prophesy the Mathurā darśana-utsava.
