  • asita - kuntala — dark / black locks
Asita = unbleached, black. Kṛṣṇa's curling black hair is a fixed feature of His Vraja form (kuntala = curls). Every detail the gopīs name is a meditation-aid Gauḍīyas use in līlā-smaraṇa.
  • mukunda - vaktram — Mukunda's face
Mukunda-vaktra — the face of the liberation-giver. Rūpa Gosvāmī in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu names darśana of His face as one of the chief vibhāvas evoking mādhurya-rasa.
  • ut - nasam — raised / prominent nose
Specific iconographic feature — Kṛṣṇa's high-bridged nose. The gopīs' grief catalogues His face feature by feature, exactly as a deity-meditator would catalogue His Deity's form.
  • pārokṣyam — invisibility / being out of sight
From parokṣa — beyond the eye. The gopīs name the precise crime: He is being made invisible. Their entire spiritual life is darśana-based; pārokṣyam is the negation of bhakti's substance.
Having shown us Mukunda’s face, framed by dark locks and beautified by His fine cheeks, raised nose and gentle smiles, which eradicate all misery, you are now making that face invisible. This behavior of yours is not at all good.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Having shown us Mukunda's face, framed by dark locks and beautified by His fine cheeks, raised nose and gentle smiles, which eradicate all misery, you are now making that face invisible. This behavior of yours is not at all good.
Commentary

"You should not compare me to an inexperienced boy." Fearing such a response from the creator, the gopis said, "You give sorrow to the souls of this world." "Though you are the creator, you show us the beautiful, smiling face of Mukunda which removes all suffering, and then make it disappear. That is very bad."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

So much for a general description of your actions! Now we will speak of what is really outrageous. You showed that face in an excellent way, with its indications of rasa (pra—darśya). That face was surrounded by black, curly locks of hair, spread like bees over his upper forehead, making his top portion beautiful. On the sides of the face are two beautiful cheeks. The nose creates beauty in the middle. The inside is beautiful with the sweetness of his teeth surrounded by his red lips slightly open with sweet smile, which removes all suffering. Because you make this beautiful face invisible to us, your action is improper. sāraṁ samasta-goṣṭhasya vidhinā haratā harim / prahṛtaṁ gopa-yoṣitsu nirghṛṇena durātmanā The cruel creator who breaks relationships has separated Kṛṣṇa, the life of all Vraja, from the gopīs. Viṣṇu Purāṇa Or, having shown clearly us the face of he who delivers us from all suffering you have made it invisible. Parokṣyam is formed like caturvarṇyam, meaning “pertaining to invisibility.” That is your unjust act. What to speak of causing separation of those who come together with friendship and love, just showing us his face is to be criticized. What then to speak of showing his face in detail (pra—darśya). They then show the details of his face.

Related verses
Having shown us Mukunda's face — dark locks, fine cheeks, raised nose, gentle smiles that erase all misery — you now make that face invisible. This is not good behavior. Showing then hiding is the cruelty of giving us a taste.
Reflection Questions
  • What 'taste' of Kṛṣṇa have you received and then watched fade?
  • How do you stay with the heart's protest rather than rationalizing it away?

Like one who is shown the moon for an instant and then has both moon and eyes covered — the gopīs have seen Mukunda's face, framed in dark curls, with raised nose, fine cheeks, sorrow-dispelling smile, and now that face is being withdrawn. The withdrawal of darśana is the deepest cruelty.
