  • śaraṇa-daḥ-satām — the giver of shelter to the saintly
Śaraṇa (shelter) + da (giver) + sat (saintly). Kṛṣṇa's title in this verse is precisely 'shelter-giver of devotees.' Gauḍīyas treasure śaraṇa-da as the very name of Kṛṣṇa's protective function — He gives śaraṇa, He does not merely permit it.
  • vijñāya — having fully understood
Vi-jñā — to know thoroughly. Kṛṣṇa sees through the disguise. Gauḍīyas read this as the antaryāmin's gaze: the same Lord who is hidden in every heart sees what is hidden in every disguise.
  • vṛkam-hariḥ-iva — like a lion (seizing) a wolf
Vṛka (wolf) + hari (lion) + iva (like). The simile reverses verse 1-2's earlier 'lion' applied to Keśī. Now the lion-comparison goes to Kṛṣṇa, and the wolf goes to the false friend. Gauḍīyas note: the false friend gets the smaller predator-name; the open demon got the larger.
Lord Kṛṣṇa, who shelters all saintly devotees, understood perfectly well what Vyomāsura was doing. Just as a lion grabs a wolf, Kṛṣṇa forcefully seized the demon as he was taking away more cowherd boys.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Lord Kṛṣṇa, who shelters all saintly devotees, understood perfectly well what Vyomāsura was doing. Just as a lion grabs a wolf, Kṛṣṇa forcefully seized the demon as he was taking away more cowherd boys.
Commentary

Krsna caught vyomasura just as a lion (hari) attacks a wolf.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Understanding Vyomāsura’s most cruel action (tasya tat karma), Kṛṣṇa, who gives himself as shelter (śarana-daḥ) to all devotees (satām) seized him. What to speak of giving himself to those with rare good fortune among the greatest devotees.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Kṛṣṇa understood the demon’s wicked act. He was the shelter of the devotees. For this reason he wore a cowherd’s dress. Otherwise he could not protect the best devotees, the cowherds. He seized the demon with force (ojasā). The demon resembled a wolf and was thus compared to a wolf in the example.

Kṛṣṇa, shelter of all saintly devotees, sees through the demon's act and seizes him like a lion grabbing a wolf. The Lord notices what we miss; what we let creep past Him, He stops mid-act.
Reflection Questions
  • Where might Kṛṣṇa be already seizing something on your behalf that you haven't yet recognized?
  • How could trusting His vigilance free you from constant self-surveillance?

Kṛṣṇa, who shelters all sādhus, sees through Vyoma's costume the way a lion sees through a wolf's grin. Saṁraṇa-da — He who gives shelter — catches the thief-in-friend's-clothes mid-step and seizes him with the same casual force a lion uses on a wolf.
