Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.34.16
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
prapannaḥ asmi
—
I am surrendered
First-person of prapatti — the formal declaration. The Gauḍīya śaraṇāgati-mantra (Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu lists six aṅgas: ānukūlyasya saṅkalpaḥ, prātikūlyasya varjanam, rakṣiṣyati, goptṛtve varaṇaṁ, ātma-nikṣepaḥ, kārpaṇyam) finds its seed in such verses.
-
mahā-yogin
—
O greatest of yogīs
Mahā (great) + yogin (one who has yoked). Not yogī in the aṣṭāṅga sense — Kṛṣṇa is yoga's source. Gauḍīyas remember BG 6.47: of all yogīs, the one who worships Me with bhakti is dearest — and Kṛṣṇa Himself is yogeśvara, the master of that union.
-
mahā-puruṣa
—
O greatest personality
The technical term: Puruṣottama, the supreme person beyond kṣara and akṣara (BG 15.16–18). Address establishes Kṛṣṇa not as a deity-among-deities but as the source of the puruṣa-tattva itself.
-
sat-pate
—
O master of the devotees (sat = the true ones)
Sat = the real, the true, the saintly. Pati = lord, husband. Bhagavān is sat-pati — the husband-protector of those committed to the real. The address frames Sudarśana's request: not 'master of all' generically, but 'my master because I am now Yours.'
O mahayogi! I was a great evil snake devouring your father just now. And now I have attained intelligence and am praising you. How inconceivable is your power of your yoga! O lord of the devotees (sat pati), of nanda and other great persons (mahapurusa), you saved me from the snake body, and you protect your devotees. This is a display of your immeasurable mercy. Know me (anujanihi) to be one of your followers.
Wherever I reside will always desire surrender to you. That is expressed in this verse. I take shelter of you (prapannaḥ). Another version has tvām āśrito ‘smi. “But that is rarely achieved.” But you are endowed with unlimited spiritual powers (mahā-yogin), since you are the supreme Lord (mahā-puruṣa). Nothing is difficult because you have the power. Particularly you protect the devotees (satām pate). You should fulfill the prediction of the sages. O Kṛṣṇa, you have given persons like Pūtanā the position of devotees. Therefore you should fulfill the desire of a person surrendered to you. Instead of Kṛṣṇa sometimes deva is seen. You are absorbed in various attractive pastimes (deva). Delivering a fallen person like me is part of your pastime. Now that I have been successful please allow me to return to my planet. “But you desire to go to a planet other than that desired by those who surrender to me.” All planets are yours. You are the controller of all planets (sarveśvara). I have been blessed by you, the antaryāmī who gives the results of all action (īśvara). What can I do in this case?
Wherever I reside I will always desire surrender to you. Or O best of protectors! O Kṛṣṇa (instead of deva), who appeared in this world to show unlimited powers! O bhagavān, you should fulfill the desires of the surrendered! Or it was said the Lord destroys fear for the surrendered. Considering his own surrender he praises the Lord. The cause of surrender is stated by the various names of the Lord. Now give me permission to leave for my planet. “You should be stay here engaged in your service.” O Kṛṣṇa, parabrahman in human form! I have no qualification to stay, as I am a devatā with a differing form from yours. That planet is also yours, Lord of all planets! You also make us enjoy the results of our previous actions. Or what can I do, being impelled by you, the giver of karmic results? O Lord (īśvara)! Or O Lord of all controllers of planets like Brahmā! I, like Indra, am not qualified to stand in front of you.
- Is your prayer mostly 'help me' or also 'command me'?
- What instruction of Kṛṣṇa have you already received but not yet obeyed?
'Command me as You will.' The healed servant does not ask for an honorable assignment, only for the assignment. Like a soldier reporting back at dawn, the Vidyādhara hands his future back to the General whose touch reissued his uniform.
